LII. SUNDOWNING

"Power."

"The ability to control things."

Madison sat in physics class, her leg bouncing against her seat.

The werewitch was extremely on edge this morning, she leftover anxiety from the previous day and night's events.

The word, 'Stiles' swarmed around in her mind, the name she had given to the forgotten person in her memories. Stiles was clearly an important person to her, Madison came to the conclusion Stiles was the person she needed to confide to.

Maybe her relationship problems weren't as big of a deal as the Wild Hunt, but while Madison sat in class feeling Liam's eyes glued to her, these problems felt pretty big.

The two had yet to speak after their argument, Madison had needed time to cool off. She hoped Liam would apologize, she didn't want to fight and had bigger worries to focus on.

It was hard to focus on Mr. Douglas' lesson as she had a million things going on in her life. She watched as he held up a metal rod and showed it to the class.

"This metal has no power. It's small, weak, insignificant. Anything we can do to change that?" He asked, and Madison watched as Corey's hand shot up eagerly.

"Corey, what you got?"

"We can add electricity," the chimera suggested.

"Exactly. We turn this metal rod into a magnet," he agreed, picking up a different rod with copper wrapped around it, "now it has power. Now it has influence over others."

Mr. Douglas then showed the metal rod against the metal ball, which began to swirl quickly around the glass bowl it was confided in.

It was cool, though Madison watched as Mr. Douglas began to cough. He placed a hand on the table, and Madison raised an eyebrow.

"Are you okay, Mr. Douglas?" Worried Hayden, to which the man looked up at her.

"Just a little cough. Where were we?" he dismissed, staring back at the ball, "right, now we have electricity...and a little bit of power. Now let's add a little more."

He raised the voltage, his eyes meeting Madison in the same way he had a few days before.

"After all, the greater the power, the greater the control." His words settled deep in Madison's stomach, making her uneasy.

He broke the eye contact as he began coughing again. He took a sip of his water bottle, and Madison turned to Hayden to look at her worriedly.

He was silent, turning his back to the class. He turned around again.

"Imagine how powerful this rod could become with boundless electricity. Say, from a lightning bolt? What else could we control?"

The voltage was raised once again as the ball spun quickly around the bowl, and Mr. Douglas began to cough once more.
