Eventually, Greg and I had to return to dinner. We were already thirty minutes late and there was no telling what William would do. Greg was silent but the feeling of his lips stayed with me. If I had not remembered dinner, there was no telling what could have happened.
"There you two are!" Kettle came up to us. "We have all been worried sick. What happened? William even made this entire meal!"
When Greg did not respond I stepped forward. "It was my fault. I lost my way trying to get here and Greg found me."
"Greg." Rachel soon appeared in the door way were Kettle once stood. I stood still, knowing what was coming was not directed at me but at Greg. Rachel's mis-matched eyes softened a bit as she spoke again, "Thank you for returning her. Please! Let us all eat in peace."
"Of course we already ate but we saved you two some," Kettle said with her big smile. I smiled back. I hated lieing but if it meant keeping Greg safe I would.
William was sitting I'm his sit at the head of the table. He stood quickly when he saw us and rushed over. "Are you alright? No one cause you any trouble right?" Some how I got the feeling he was talking about Greg and not just because he had a quick glance in Greg's direction.
"No, we are fine," I reassured him. "I just got lost again."
William looked intently at me. "What did Greg do?"
"W-what," I asked innocently. "Nothing, really. He only helped me find my way here.". I stayed calm on the outside but inside I was coming unhinged. William studied me a moment longer before sighing.
"I suppose it is true. Although I find it hard to believe." They all continued talking amongst themselves as Greg and I ate. During most of the conversation I stole glances at Greg. He seemed more stern tonight and his frown reached his eyes. Even though he is like this, and the fact he is engaged, I couldn't help feeling like a love-struck idiot when our eyes connected here and there.
I took a small bite of William's home cooked meal while taking a glance at Rachel, whose elderly face now smiled big. She seemed so much like before when I first met her. William was no exception with his outrageous flarings and broad smiles that hid a deep pain from losing Maddie. Kettle too, with her past ever close, wears a smile that is so cheerful.
Strange how people can hide their true faces so well.
Meet me on the other side of that one door where we first met. I will explain all the things that are happening here I remembered Greg telling me. I laughed at one of Kettle's jokes to keep up appearances before my thoughts drew back to what he said. Come at one o'clock. Until then, you need to appear cold and distant towards me. I will protect you.
My heart beat sped like a race car and I had to control myself from appearing too giddy.
I really was morphing into a true member here. Hiding my true feelings behind a fake smile. Dinner passed by surprisingly quickly, Greg leaving first, and I went over to say goodnight to William.
"My Jade," he said stealing a kiss from my hand, "Are you leaving for your room?" Rachel stood by him and she seemed even more kind than before. Instead of flinching away, I sucked up my fear and embarrassment, leaned into William with my best smile. I used my over sized chest to my advantage by pressing it hard against his chest. I looked up seductively, "Yes, my Boss. I must rest now, but I will see you soon."
William seemed surprised by my act, even going so far as blushing loudly. Rachel, I saw, smiled brightly with enough joy that it hurt to even glance. I heard William clear his throat and saw him quickly glance at Rachel before once again laying eyes on me. He closed his beautiful eyes and when he opened them again he was a totally diffrent person.
His left hand cuffed my cheek, holding my face steadily, and his right hand caressed my left arm slowly. His gentle touch made a slight blush break through my facade. "Why wait? Why not," his hand fell to my hip and I clenched my teeth to remain unwavering, "come spend some time with me tonight?"
W-what? No William, please! Please don't ask me that!
Luickly I did not need to respond before Rachel huffed. "William! My poor daughter needs her rest, you brute!". She peeled me away from William and held me close. "Please, control yourself. You will not have to wait long."
William seemed to come back to himself then and his eyes darted between me and his mother. He lowered his head, "Yes, of course. Forgive me Jade." He walked off but not before I saw His saddened frown. Rachel patted my back and lead me away from the dinning room.
"I am so happy you have finally taken your role seriously," Rachel said after a moment of silence.
"Yes, I have," I faked a smile. "I even finished all of my files," I lied.
Although Rachel seemed not to notice as she exclaimed, "That is great!"
We walked to my room were Bob and Wade stood watch. They looked anxious and worried but hide it to were i could barely tell. As soon as Wade saw me he gasped, "Jun! What happened-"
"Silence, Cunner," Rachel ordered. Wade back away and Bob put a comforting hand on his shoulder. I gave them both an apologetic smile from behind her. Rachel stood straight and narrowed her eyes meanicingly, "You two may leave. I believe my daughter has finally come to her senses."
Bob grunted and Wade seemed hesitant but they obeyed orders and left. Rachel turned to me, "Good night, my daughter. Oh, this is exciting! I will invited everyone! This will be a historical event for the Chocolates."
She started to walk away when j stopped her. "Rachel?"
"Hmm? Yes, daughter?"
"Why me? Why, out of everyone here, did you choose me? An outsider?". I looked at her serious to my fullest extent.
She seemed unaffected by it though and gave me her own serious look that held sadness.
"I am a Jade. I have a gift to see and know things about people I shouldn't, and that is what I got from my mother. The last Jade." She held one arm and looked away. "One night I had a dream. I have had an ominous feeling since the dream and I am afraid, Jun."
I tensed when she said this. So it is not just me that felt that I thought recalling the heavy feelings of bad omens. "What was the dream about?"
Rachel sighed and her true age shone through. "My dream was about a girl who looked just like you. I sensed the gift from you and the way you held yourself was amazing. The dream took a bad turn then and next thimg I knew the main house was in flames. So much blood shed and there you were, saving my friends," she looked at sadly, "my family.
This is how I knew I had to find you. Bring you here before it was to late. The only way for me to invite an outsider in is if I deemed then worthy and Jade seemed like a nice cover up for me." She turned. "Please, keep this to your self. Become the Jade, so I know the Chocolates are safe."
She left me then, to carry the burden of her secret. I went inside my room and ploped on the bed. I set my clock that I discovered next to the bed and feel asleep.
I dreamed in that small time I slept. I dreamed of someone dieing by hands and another being hurt but before I could inflict the final blow, flames consumed hi and everything around us. With my mind racing for a way out I heard my own voice call out into the smog.
Into never ending flames, my tortured soul goes. It goes to save others and to repent for another's sinful crimes.
