Ariel's POV

1 YEAR LATER

I never would have imagined that I could last a year without Eli by my side. The pain of not seeing him was almost unbearable. The first few months were torturous and I slept most days in my old bedroom. My parents didn’t ask any questions, they already knew why I was home and in so much pain. When I was finally able to bear some of the pain, I went back to school to get an education. I would have just lain in bed all day if my parents hadn’t suggested it. I went back to school and I found it easier to make new friends. Of course Julie will always be my best friend and I did manage to still hang out with her. I was hanging out and going to parties. It was the only way to ease the pain.

To my surprise after the first semester, I found a guy that took interest in me. Toby was his name, and he always willing to help me out when I needed it. No matter how much time we spent together, it still wasn’t the same. We took some classes together and helped each study and afterwards we hang out and went to parties.

It was almost 2 in the morning when Toby started to walk me back to my parent’s apartment. He helped me up the stairs and walked me to the apartment door. I was so trashed I couldn’t walk and I couldn’t feel anything. I couldn’t speak but I did know what exactly was going on.

“Are your parents at home?” He asked.

I shook my head. He wouldn’t be able to understand me if I tried to speak. My parents where gone on a mini vacation. I told them that I would be alright by myself.

“Do you mind if I come in?” He asked.

I shook my head. He opened the door and we walked in. I tried to turn on the lights but Toby ended up doing it. He walked me over to the couch and laid me down. I stared at the wall until Toby cupped my cheek and tilted my head to look at him.

“Ariel, you know that I really like you, don’t you?” He asked.

I nodded my head. I liked him too but not in the way he liked me.

“Can I kiss you?” He asked, as he leaned towards to me. I could feel his hot breath on my lips.

I shook my head, and I took my trembling fingers to my neck. I pulled on the chain but I couldn’t pull it out. Everything felt so surreal, that I couldn’t do anything. He gently cupped my hand and pulled out the chain that was around my neck. He gasped as he saw my wedding ring on the chain.

“You’re…married…?” He asked. He was speechless.

I nodded and then my whole body went limp. Toby held onto me but I couldn’t look at him. He forced my head to look at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, angrily.

I couldn’t respond and now I couldn’t even move. If he wanted too he could rape me and I would be powerless to stop him. I blinked at him and he just laid me back down. He stormed out of the room and slammed the apartment door behind him. I closed my eyes and darkness enclosed around me…

I opened my eyes and saw my parents walk in. My mother came over to me, “Are you drunk again?” I blinked but I still couldn’t move my body or speak. “Ariel, honey, I think that you need to lay off the booze for a little while. You are on a path that leads to darkness.”

No, mother being with Eli was on a path to darkness.

She must have read my facial expression, “Eli is not a path to darkness. Why can’t you admit that you want to be with him? I know that you love him more than that other boy that you been seeing.”

“Toby is a nice young man.” My father remarked, “You know he’s staying in school and watching out for Ariel. I mean he brought her home, laid her on the couch, and left. That sounds like a real man instead of that womanizing, drug addicted loser."
