Their mother, was dead, but it was so difficult to believe.

Their mother, who had protected them, loved them, was, gone.

Gone, before the family had a opportunity to exchange their last words,

Dead, before their very eyes.

One side of her body was burned nearly to the bone, black, and charred flesh, marring her soft face.

Her blue eyes had been open, but they were dull, and lifeless.

He had told himself not to cry, not to break, when his sister still needed him.

Even as she sobbed, and screamed, he remained still, frozen, unable to react, to understand that their mother was gone.

And with their mother, their lives, as they had known it, was gone as well.

He remembered the day he and his sister had met her, her promise, "I promise you, I am not going to abandon the two of you. I promise that you can trust me."

But now, what did any promises matter, life had made sure, that their family did not have a happy ending.

Life was cruel, crueler than anyone could perceive.

But in that moment, he had realized the heartbreaking truth about life and the world.

Life was precious, he was precious.

No, he had been precious.

He wasn't, no more.

Kazutaka was gone.

3 years later . . .

The boy, now a young man, walked along the dirt road, eating a small bun, in his other hand he held a small package of food, for him and his sister.

It had been some time since the death of his mother, life had been hard, after her passing, and he and his sister struggled to survive at first, but with time, he had realized  that he was good at fighting, and Ume's beauty, was unrivaled within almost the entire Redlight District.

He had first wanted her to become a regular young lady, but they had both realized that it was impossible.

Without a home, nor stable income they had both been forced into extreme means to survive.

So his sister now served in the Kyogoku House.

And he worked as a debt collector.

They were called Gyus.

Gyus worked to live, and lived to work.

The lives of Gyus weren't precious, and they were not valued, Kazutaka had died the moment his mother had passed, but had faded away when he had started to work as a Gyu.

His mother wouldn't be proud, and it hurt too much to remember her, her smile when she gave him his name, Kazutaka.

So he had rid the world of his former self, he would now collect debts, and he would collect his dues, because his name, was Gyutaro.
