She had been careless.
Airi sighed as she sat by the futon on which the little boy slept.
She should have noticed something, her parents would be ashamed of her. Having educated her in medicine ever since she was able to speak, herself even being a doctor, yet she had failed to notice how sick the boy had been.
The little girl, Ume, her head in Airi's lap was asleep, too exhausted after everything to stay awake, being only a child.
The boy would live, that Airi was sure of, but when he would wake up was a question which would only be answered when he did.
Taking notice of a loose strand of hair on Ume's face, Airi tucked it behind her ear, smiling when she noticed how the child's face had relaxed in sleep.
She looked up to a pained groan before the boy sat up, a hand on his left temple, his blue eyes open.
"Where are we?"
The boy rasped out as she picked up a kettle of water and a cup which she had kept by her side, while she had waited for him to awake
"We are at your new home."
She smiled when she handed him the warm water.
"So, it wasn't a dream."
The boy murmured before he took a swallow of the liquid as if it were wine.
"Are you feeling alright?"
Airi asked quietly, careful not to wake the little girl lying in her arms.
"Better than before."
The boy replied, relieved to see his sister sleeping peacefully.
"You didn't abandon us."
His next words caused a painful ache in her heart when she looked at him.
"Of course not, why would I? I promised you two I would take care of both of you, remember?"
Her voice was gentle and the boy closed his eyes, wondering, questioning if this was all true, or if he opened them, he would be back in the cold alley again?
"I promise you, I am not going to abandon the two of you. I promise that you can trust me."
She looked down, gently smoothing back the little girl's hair.
The boy opened his eyes and gazed upon his savior as if he was looking at an angel.
And to him, he was looking at an angel, someone who he could trust, someone who he could let his guard down while with them, someone who cared about him and his sister.
"Thank you, Airi." He heard himself whisper before he drifted off once more.
