Catching Up

The next morning I woke up and felt more refreshed than I had in weeks. This was one of the best feelings in the world. I felt like I was ready to take on whatever the world could dish out at me today. I felt like it was going to be a good day.

As it turns out, I was the first one awake for once. I took advantage of this and changed out of the clothes I had been wearing yesterday and took off all the makeup that had smeared across my face because I was too stupid to take it off last night. When I was ready to actually be seen by anybody else, I walked back out into the main ICU room and saw everyone else was still asleep. "Damn, of all the days you guys could choose to sleep in, it's the day I'm actually in a good mood." I mumbled grumpily to myself. "Well, Cubbie, I'll be back." I looked over at the last remaining band member that was still out. "Don't try to die again while I'm gone, or ever, for that matter. I mean it, mister." I chuckled to myself, realized how crazy I've become as I walked out to the elevator.

When I got downstairs, I went to the cafeteria. I decided that I wanted a cup of coffee, so I browsed the little coffee bar in the corner of the room. After I had made my cup, I went to sit down at one of the tables to enjoy my coffee alone in peace. But, it didn't go that way. I didn't enjoy the cup at all. The coffee was awful. "Man, this was a disappointment." I muttered to myself as I dumped it in the trash.

"Wanna get something better?" Bradie asked suddenly from behind me. I turned around in surprise. He laughed as I clutched my shirt where my heart is. "Sorry?"

"Don't do that again!" I laughed and slapped his shoulder. "Not cool. You really scared me."

"Come on, I already said I was sorry."

"That wasn't enough. Actually say you're sorry."

"I'm sorry!"

"Okay I'm good."

"So what do you say?"

"To what?"

"I asked if you actually wanted to get some real coffee. Brenden just took over for me and I was going to go get some anyway. I thought I'd come see if you wanted any."

"That sounds nice, actually. I need some real coffee for a change. Do you know where a good coffee place is?"

"Oh, yeah. Come on, we'll take my car." Bradie smiled and started walking out of the cafeteria. I hurried to catch up with him. We got out to the car and drove through downtown, making some small talk, but I was mostly just happy to be out of the hospital. Bradie eventually pulled into a parking space right in front of a small coffee house.

"Have you been here before?"

"Yeah, I actually used to work here when I was still in the Academy."

"You worked as a barista?" I laughed at the thought of tough guy Bradie making people's frappuchinos. I don't know why that idea seemed so crazy, but it really did.

"Yeah, is that really so shocking?"

"A little." I shrugged as I got out of the car. "But I trust in your opinion and decisions, so you must've done it for the right reasons."

"Yeah, it was a good paying job and I got free coffee all the time. Who wouldn't want that?"

"Maybe I should be a part-time barista." I shrugged. "Seems like a good job."
