"So, where are we going?" I asked as he led me out to his car.
"I already told you, there's this really good diner by my house."
"Yeah, but what if I wanted to make myself a pizza or something tonight? Why were not gonna stand it if I said no?"
"Because, I haven't seen you in four years and I want to spend some time with you."
"Whatever." I rolled my eyes and got in to the car.
Cubbie chuckled and jogged around to the other side and got in. We drove through Downtown before he let me out in front of this diner. "Go sit down and order, I'll park."
"Thanks." I smiled and walked into the restaurant.
I sat down in a booth in the corner. There was almost no one in the diner, there was only another couple sitting at the bar sharing a slice of pie. A waitress came over as soon as I sat down and looked out the window to my left. "What'll ya take?" She asked cheerily. She reminded me of all the waitresses in the small town diners I used to go to with my family back in Texas.
"I'll just take a hamburger."
"Want any fries?"
"Yeah, I think I will." I smiled.
"Great! Are you here alone?"
"No, I have someone else coming. He was just parking the car."
"Oh, a special someone?" She raised her eyebrows.
No..." I laughed. "He's practically family, and he's married."
"Well, darn!" She laughed. "I'll be back to take his order, I'll go put yours in the kitchen in the mean time. Do you want anything to drink?"
"Yeah, do y'all have any Dr. Pepper?"
"We sure do! I'll be back." She smiled and turned to leave. She and back a few seconds later with a huge glass of the soda. "Here you go!"
"Thanks!" I smiled and started drinking as I looked out the window, just as the windows streaked with light rain, causing the lights to spread beyond where they usually reach. The neon lights spread and their images distorted. "Ugh, where's Cubbie?" I groaned to myself as I sat there. "He better not've blown me off."
"Why would I do that?" Cubbie suddenly slid into the booth across from me.
"Hey! I thought you might've bailed on me!"
"And, like I said a second ago, why would I do that?"
"Well, it took you a long time to park a car." I scowled as Cubbie shrugged. "It took you that long to park the car? What did you do? Turn into the valet?"
"Ha ha, very funny." Cubbie snorted. "I ran into some people in the parking lot." He rolled his eyes.
Before I knew what was going on, Cubbie was scooting over and someone was slipping into the seat next to him and someone was sitting on the edge of my bench. "Cubbie, what's this?" I asked as I moved over.
"Calliegh, I'd like you to meet Rebecca and Gemma." Cubbie smiled proudly as I looked from Rebecca to Gemma, I can't believe they're here.
"Seriously? You dragged your family here?" I laughed as Cubbie stepped on my foot from underneath the table.
"So, this is really her?" Rebecca looked at me and then back to Cubbie.
"Yeah, after four years of searching for her, I finally found her again." Cubbie nodded back towards me.
"Dad, this is the girl that came from Texas?" Gemma asked. Hearing her call him 'Dad' sent chills down my spine for some reason.
"Yes, she's as good as family."
