I felt myself suspended in a sea of black, motionless in the eternal void. My eyes were working just fine but there was no point trying to see in this blank space.
Even my thoughts were empty. There was nothing to think about, nothing to wish for, nothing to hope for because this was the end.
If this was all that awaited me on the other side of life, then I wasn't exactly surprised. After all, I was an Incarnate so it was only a matter of time before my will was passed onto to someone else and that way, I would still be alive, somewhat.
No. That's not how my life would end. The cycle was disrupted by my hand so even I don't know what's waiting for me anymore.
Up until now, I thought I had everything planned out. Everything I did had been calculated to the finest detail. From the people I knew I would meet all the way back in Rosewood Town to the grace of my death at Heaven's Summit.
But now that I was floating in an ocean of nothingness, I realised that everything was for nought. Or rather, this was how everything was going to turn out anyway. Maybe no matter what, this was the outcome that faced us and there was no escaping the inevitable pull of death. So does that mean everything I've done was in fear of death?
Well, even I couldn't answer that.
Sometimes there are questions that aren't meant to be answered and this seemed like one of those. Searching for an answer in the endless void was pointless. Much like it was meaningless to look for a meaning in the life I lived.
Maybe I should have lived every moment like it was new, crossing the bridge when I came to it, if you will. But even that didn't seem to be right. Still, this is where I would end up and there was no helping that.
Yet every day felt like it meant so much, every year felt like a milestone had been reached. I guess this was just what fate had in store for me. Not that I believed in it.
After all, who could see this coming. All that waited for me on the other side of a short life was nothing. Was this what fate predicted?
Ah.
There I go again.
Asking a question I couldn't possibly answer.
Then again, I guess it's the nature of all living things to ask questions that they can't answer. And when we finally find a question we can answer, it makes us feel all the more intelligent, even though there are still countless other questions that have still yet to be answered.
I stirred from where I was laying, hoping that I could at least do that. But of course, there was no point. I was destined to be suspended in a sea of nothing for eternity.
In the darkness, I searched for anything to keep my mind from wandering and that's when the faces of my friends, who had become my family, entered my thoughts.
Death.
The young man who had become my brother, even if we only knew each other for a fraction of the endless well of time. I hoped he was doing well because when I found him, he was at the lowest he had ever been.
Ariel.
My younger sister. Even though we were only separated by a few months. Still, she was someone I could rely on. The only thing that was holding her back was herself and as obvious as that sounds, she truly had boundless potential and I really wanted to see her achieve what she was capable of.
Jade.
The woman I wanted to live out my days with. A fleeting dream that sounded nice when I spoke it with my words. I didn't need to hear it from her, but I knew she felt the same. Wanting to escape this world and live peacefully. That was always the dream.
