Scene 63: Interior / Yale’s Dorm / Day

Niall seems to be eagerly looking for something, he opens every drawer he finds and gets frustrated when he is not able to find anything. His phone rings and he runs to pick it up.

NIALL: “Finally! What’s wrong with you? I could’ve been dying and you wouldn’t pick up!”

LOUIS: “Sorry. I was having lunch with a friend.”

NIALL: “A friend? What?” (gets excited) “Was it RJ?”

LOUIS: “Nope, I still haven’t heard from RJ. What’s wrong? Why do you sound so agitated?”

NIALL: (steps on a cardboard box to reach the furniture’s top shelf but the box breaks and Niall falls to the ground) “Ouch!”

LOUIS: “What’s all that noise? What’s happening?”

NIALL: (dizzy, laying on the ground) “I don’t know what’s happening.”

LOUIS: “Are you doing drugs?”

NIALL: “No… but everyone else in campus seems to be.”

LOUIS: “What are you saying?”

NIALL: “Remember that pepper spray you bought once?”

LOUIS: “Yeah, what about it?”

NIALL: “I need to borrow it. Where is it?”

LOUIS: (tries not to laugh) “What do you need it for?”

NIALL: “I just need it!”

LOUIS: “But what happened?”

NIALL: “Why are you asking so many questions?! I just need the damn thing!”

LOUIS: “Wow, that’s… rude.”

NIALL: “Sorry… I’m just stressed.”

LOUIS: “Any particular reasons?”

NIALL: (lowers his voice, looks around) “Something happened. My life might be in danger.”

LOUIS: “I’m sure you are just exaggerating… as always.”

NIALL: “No, you don’t understand. I…. I almost got… I can’t even say it.”

LOUIS: “At least try.”

NIALL: “I can’t. It’s too painful.”

LOUIS: “Niall.”

NIALL: “Where can I buy a pepper spray?”

LOUIS: “Downtown. That’s where I got it.”

NIALL: “Okay, I’ll go now. If I don’t call you every 5 minutes, it means that something bad happened to me and you need to call the police, okay?”

LOUIS: “If New Haven is so dangerous now.” (lowers his voice) “Why don’t you just come home, Niall?”

NIALL: “I can’t. If I leave, I’m letting the criminals win.”
