Strong light filtered through your eyelids as your head rested on something soft. It was warm and pleasant but somehow felt different from any other pillow you'd ever tried...
You slowly opened your eyes, still feeling dazed by your dreamless sleep but when you realized what you'd been using as a pillow, you froze. Your head was lying on Ekko's left shoulder, who was fast asleep under you, resting on his back. Your thoughts raced as you desperately tried to remember how you'd ended up like this - still on the roof at the edge of Zaun.
You remembered lying on your backs with Ekko, seeing the stars above for the first time in your life. The boy even told you the name of a few constellations - the Pegasus being your favorite one - but the following images faded to black. You must have fallen asleep. And in your sleep, you snuggled up to the boy, probably...
Your cheeks immediately heated up and your heart wanted to beat its way out of your chest, you were sure about that, as you carefully looked at the sleeping firelight under you. He seemed so peaceful... There weren't any puckers around his nose, no furrows, no grins, or any signs of stress and anger - just Ekko being the most peaceful you'd ever seen him.
You couldn't help it.
Your eyes wandered on their own to look at his lips. Your thoughts also strayed to think about how soft they could be, and how'd they taste if he kissed you... You felt the warmness inside your chest again being hotter than ever and you sat up like someone who'd got struck by lightning.
"Damn it!" you scolded yourself under your breath, pressing both of your hands against your own chest. It was the third time lately you felt this hotness and your powers had come to life by themselves twice. Nothing like this ever happened to you. You always healed on purpose...
"Morning." you heard the sleepy grunt of Ekko beside you and you were glad you weren't on his shoulders anymore because even this way you couldn't stop blushing. "Gosh, I haven't felt this relaxed since I was a kid..." he mumbled, rubbing the dream away from his eyes as he sat up. He saw your confused face - thinking it was because you were still on the roof and started explaining: "You fell asleep and since you said that healing drained you, I didn't want to wake you up - and, well, I also fell asleep." he chuckled a little and you couldn't help but smile at him.
"I don't know how you'd ended up sleeping on me though..." he said making your smile immediately fade off your lips and your eyes grow as big as a pair of coasters.
"You've been awake?" you asked, feeling yourself blush like crazy again.
"Yeah..." Ekko chuckled as he stood up. "For a while now. You know, it's kind of creepy to watch other people in their sleep..." he stretched casually and you were sure that you were going to die right at that moment and at that spot. If you had a shovel with you, you'd probably have dug yourself under the earth already. But you were contemplating burying yourself with your own hands either way...
"I wasn't watching!" you lied. "I was half asleep and didn't understand where I was..." you mumbled under your nose as you stood up as well, combing through your hair in your embarrassment, strictly looking at the metal plates under your feet.
"You are so easy to embarrass." Ekko stepped by your side and when you looked at him the smile he wore on his lips made your heart race again... He was so gentle and so soft at that moment and your eyes locked onto his one more time... In his hands, he had the hoverboard, and you knew you'd go back to the firelight base soon. A strange kind of disappointment nested itself into your heart at the thought...
"You're enjoying it, aren't you?" You asked, feeling a little defeated. He put the hoverboard down, stepped on the pedal and the engine started purring as the device rose into the air. A light breeze stroked your hot face as your eyes looked at the two cities for one, last time. In the daylight, the differences were more distinguishable, but still, the view was both stunning and harrowing at the same time...
Maybe in a very distant future, Ekko's dream of the two cities uniting might come true...
"Kind of." he reached his arm out for you again, to help you up, but this time he didn't let you stand up behind him. "Sorry, you gotta go first row this time. We've been out for too long..." he apologized as he hugged you to his body tightly again - not that you'd wanted to complain. The closeness of him made you feel at ease and safe, even though he really hurried this time.
Your stomach still despised this means of transport, but you had to admit, you were sort of getting used to it.
"If you ever need to find your way back to the firelights, " Ekko talked into your ear so that you could hear him better in the leading wind. "Just follow the sewers and pipes towards the river, and once you get closer to the edge of Zaun, enter one and follow the direction. It will lead you back to us."
You watched him do exactly as he said, entering one huge pipe after a while. In there it was so dark, you could barely even see your own nose, as the only light source was the hoverboard's green electrical flashing. At its end, you ended up in another drain, but it was much smaller than the one where the tree stood.
On one side of the curved walls, there was a huge metal door behind which there was the firelight base. When Ekko opened it, you could see the heads turning towards your direction, some people even cheered when they saw their leader returning.
When you looked at young Firelight by your side, you saw his relieved smile when he saw that everything was okay.
"Ekko!" A kid yelled his name. In his hands, there was a small leather ball as he happily jogged towards the boy. "When will we play the rematch?" The kid asked, raising the ball above his head.
"Soon!" Ekko chuckled. "My room could use some cleaning anyway..." he joked and you smiled as you watched him. How did he manage to stay so cheerful despite all the responsibility he had to carry on his shoulders?
"No way! Next time, I'm gonna win!" The boy was determined, you could see that as you chuckled a little at their interactions.
But then Scar stepped to Ekko. He leaned close to him to whisper something in his ear and you saw the boy's smile fading away immediately at the news...
