You had absolutely no idea how you'd ended up at your old home. You remembered standing up from the table and grabbing a hoverboard into your hands right after - the cold metal slipping out of your sweaty palms. You also remembered almost falling off the device the moment you turned the engine on but somehow managed to stay on top as you flew up by the tree, out of the enormous drain that was the firelight base. Ekko's efforts of teaching you how to use a hoverboard might paid off after all.
"...explosions on the bridge..." the four little words echoed through your head as the wind hurt your eyes. You nearly crashed into every single building that came to your way as your thoughts raced each other and you couldn't even see where you were going. You were just going.
There was only one person in Zaun who liked to solve everything by blowing things up and it was Silco's daughter.
Jinx.
The very person Ekko still cared about, no matter how hard he tried to deny it in front of himself and the world - you could always see it in his eyes when he talked about her... And now she was the one who...
Thin streams of tears washed your face as you flew deeper and deeper into the stomach of Zaun. You wished you knew how to find people in this city. You wished you had the strength and cunning to put up a fight against someone, anyone... Then maybe you could had got your revenge already. You could have helped Ekko by being there, by his side and not sitting comfortably in a shelter, being useless as always...
If you had at least warned them...
You felt something wasn't right and still, you said nothing. The list of the people that you could have helped grew longer today... again...
You wiped the tears out of your eyes with your fist but by doing this, you lost your balance and before you could had done anything - your body crashed the dirty ground under you. Your only luck was that you weren't flying high anymore, but much closer to the ground. You heard the hoverboard sliding by your head as you coughed, trying to get the air back into your lungs.
Pain throbbed on the left side of your face and shoulder as you gathered your aching self. Massaging your head, you looked around to see where you were and you recognized the place immediately. You knew that street like the back of your hand. To be honest, that was the only place in Zaun that you really knew.
Maybe you should had never left... Everyone you cared about always had to meet the same fate... It felt like you were a curse yourself...
Your eyes looked around the grimly lit street but it was so empty now that only fog filled the spaces between the buildings... Even though, when you still lived there, half of the people roaming the streets were thugs and shimmer addicts being their own shadows, it still felt a bit heartbreaking to see your home so abandoned.
The people who had lived there probably moved away when the factory got destroyed. You were sure you could had found all of them somewhere around the streets of another shimmer factory... Those ones who hadn't lost their lives in the explosion, of course.
The pain throbbing on the left side of your body made you limp slightly as you aimed for a building a few corners away. In your right hand, you dragged the hoverboard after you on the ground - the loud metallic screech accompanying your way. You weren't sure if could still make it fly or you wrecked the device for good; the only thing you knew was that you couldn't use it soon again as your whole body was killing you.
You could had healed yourself easily, but you didn't care. To be honest, you weren't even sure you could had used your powers now, even if you wanted to... There wasn't anything to think of, that could have helped you use them...
Your steps echoed through the empty streets as you were nearing the door of your old home. When you reached it, you had to take a huge breath to not break down when you opened the entrance. The stale air stung your nose as you stepped inside the dark room and the only thing greeting you was the same old creak of the wooden floor under your feet.
You coughed again as you felt the familiar itch at the back of your throat. The time you had spent with the firelights almost made you forgot how unpleasant it was to breath down there.
Your steps automatically took you into your old living room. The small dining table was well hidden under a thick cover of dust as well as every single furniture in the premise... When your eyes fell onto the chest of drawers, you realized why you were there. Why your body decided to drag you back to your painful past...
You dropped the hoverboard to take the framed photograph into your hands. You had to dust it with your lower arm to be able to see the faces looking back at you from the black and white picture. It was so strange to see them again. And funny. You had seen those faces all your life and still, you almost forgot their features - the way their noses curved and their eyes shone. And no matter how hard you tried to, you couldn't recall their laughs anymore either...
Will you forget Ekko the same way? Soon you won't be able to recall the feeling of his lips against yours, the warmth of his body and ring of his voice...
A single drop of tear poured down your cheeks and you wiped your eyes angrily. You turned the picture around and took it out of its frame. You carefully folded it into half and put the paper inside a pocket of your jacket before looking around one last time. Now that you had this picture, there wasn't really anything else you needed from this place.
You sighed shakily and looked around, letting your memories come to you one last time, before deciding to leave this place - this time forever.
But just when you wanted to lean down to grab the hoverboard into your aching hands, you heard the door of the entrance creak...
