Chapter 20

"How did you get these?" Ekko asked. You could hear the astonishment in his voice as he looked down at the shards laying on your palm and then straight back into your eyes.

"I told you! I was out at the dump all day - you have no idea how deep I dug myself into that place - when I stumbled upon a bunch of fancy, broken glass pieces. And these were just lying among them... I have no idea how can something this valuable just be thrown out..." you furrowed your brows. You couldn't stop talking, you were so glad you could share a conversation with Ekko again. "My theory is that, someone experimented with a gemstone and blew it up - along with the windows - and some janitor," you chuckled a little here." just swept it up to their dustpan and..." you couldn't finish your sentence.

Ekko's lips pressed against yours shut you up. You felt both of his arms lock around your lower back and your feet were barely touching the ground under you as he raised you up slightly. After the first seconds of surprise, you closed your eyes as well and kissed him back, but this time it felt different from the previous 2 occasions. He was so passionate and longing and when you felt his tongue softly stroke your upper lip, something warm stirred your insides...

Having the crystals in one of your hands, you could only wrap one arm around his neck as you felt a type of hunger awaken inside you, you'd never really felt before. You wanted Ekko - all of him - as you pushed your body against his and when you did, he immediately pulled you closer to himself by your waist, making you hum softly into his mouth.

You had no idea why he was so eager to kiss you now but you were definitely sure that you never wanted it to end - so, of course, it was almost physically painful when his lips parted yours...

"No..." he huffed silently and you looked at him under your furrowed brows, with your mind fogged completely, as he leaned his forehead against yours. He had to swallow before starting to speak.

"I gotta..." he paused for a second, his eyes never leaving your lips. "I gotta talk to Heimerdinger..." you reached your hand out without a word to drop the crystals into his gloved palms, still being in a drunken awe of how he kissed you before. But why did he say that 'no'? What no?

He turned his back to you reluctantly and you just stood there and watched him, feeling a strange kind of disappointment nesting itself into your chest. He looked back at you before stepping out of his room. "Hey..." he hesitated a little. "Wait for me... If you'd like to."

And your heart sank sadly. As much as you wanted to, you couldn't... You had a rendezvous tonight, with your brother...

You had been planning this for weeks, you couldn't just chicken out now... You stayed up late in the nights, trying to come up with the perfect scenario in your head that you could follow through. You even sneaked out and stole yourself weapons - a staff which's both sides could expand and one of those grenades that crystalized when exploding, paralyzing their targets. If everything worked out, these were the only things you needed...

Every cell in your body longed back to that room to finally spend some time with him, to listen to his concerns, to charge up with his presence and also talk about the things that had been bothering you. And of course, you still hadn't recovered from that kiss... But you had to try. And Neo had been on his own for so long, maybe even scared as he was constantly losing himself...

The thoughts kept rushing through your head as you flew above Zaun, aiming towards the most hidden, dirtiest and lowest lanes of the whole city. You just wished that your brother was still roaming around your old home - having no other places he had known before the explosion. You were glad now that the neighborhood had become empty because this way, he couldn't hurt anyone and you also only had to worry about him.
