"I don't know if I've made the right decision." Ekko sighed tiredly and the frustration of being at his wits' end showed on his face. He told you about Vi - the girl he believed was dead for long, long years. He also told you about bits of the night he lost most of his family - father figures and friends he didn't name. Silco took everything from him as well, leaving him to be on his own - and yet he stood up and built this base, gathered the firelights and provided help and shelter for those in need.
"I could have made use of this." He rolled the little glowing, blue stone between his gloved fingers. "To bring an end to Silco finally..."
You wondered if he knew how strong he was? If he really knew he wouldn't have doubted himself.
"Just look at this place." you gestured all around you. "Are you seriously doubting your decision-making skills? " You reached for his hands to gently close his fingers around the little gemstone. Ekko's eyes wandered towards your touch, thoughts visibly racing through his mind. "This might be the first step towards what you've wanted." you smiled at him reassuringly.
You didn't trust Piltovians much, but if someone from the city herself believes that a gesture like that could change the council's mind, why couldn't the plan work out?
Ekko finally looked at you and sighed.
"Then I should go soon..." he put the gemstone inside the container hanged over his chest and leaned against the wooden frame of your window. "Damn, I wish I could stay here..." he closed his eyes for a second and a small smile appeared on his lips when he opened them again. His gaze immediately looked for yours. "...with you." your heart gave a leap. His hand reached for yours but he didn't hold it nor pulled you close to make a move - he just played with your fingers. Butterflies came to life inside your stomach and when he continued his train of thoughts, you felt something strange inside your heart you'd never felt before. "Being with you is just so... peaceful. I like it."
You didn't know what to say. You liked his company as well. More than anything else you'd ever liked in your life and you wished all your time in the world could had been spent with him. But you didn't want to sound clingy nor you wanted to be like a burden and hold him back from the things that were really important.
He was faster than your brain and before you could have come up with an answer, he stood up. "Now come on..." he stepped towards your door and opened it. "Vi and Caitlyn are probably waiting for me." he stepped outside and when you saw his figure leaving, a strange and unwelcomed feeling gripped your guts.
***
As you watched the two young women walking in front of you, you couldn't help but think they liked each other. You saw it in the way they looked at each other and their arms kept 'accidentally' brushing against each other's.
You liked their contrast - Vi being open, friendly and welcoming, while Caitlyn disciplined and easily embarrassed. You smiled a little as you watched them, walking towards the entrance of the base. The sky above you was darkening already, making the firelights green glow stronger around the huge tree. Lamps were already being turned on here and there and a general, light aura took over the place.
Still, you felt the cold inside your stomach and you were nervous. Almost as nervous as that day, when you felt that something wasn't right as you sat by your dining table and waited for your family to never arrive. You hated this feeling and the fact that you couldn't shake it off...
You suddenly grabbed Ekko's arm to stop him. "Hey..." you started but didn't know what to say. That you have a feeling someone's going to die or at least get hurt tonight? You could heal not see the future... "Just - just take care today, okay?" was all you said in the end as your eyes desperately held onto Ekko's wishing he could read your mind.
"Of course." Ekko searched your face. "And you don't want to do anything stupid while I'm away?" he asked. He saw your expression and probably saw something else behind it than what actually was on your mind.
"No, of course not..." you dropped your shoulders. "I will just try to help around until you come back." he watched you, with a gentle smile on his lips. You could see he was battling with himself over something and just when he opened his mouth to finally give voice to his thoughts -
"You coming, little man?" Vi's voice could be heard from the entrance. Scar had opened it for them already and the two girls were standing in the dark opening that reminded you of a hungry mouth.
"Little man?" you asked and for the first time, it was Ekko the one who got embarrassed.
"Listen, it was an okay nickname when I was 12, but it is not anymore... I hope I'm clear..." he closed his eyes and rubbed his neck as you chuckled. "If you call me like that when I get home..."
"You gotta go." you interrupted him sadly. You saw both Vi and Cait watch the two of you from the entrance and you fought your urge to hold Ekko back.
"Yeah..." he sighed and turned towards the girls. He looked back at you to say something, but he shut his mouth before any voice could have left his lips. He just shot a smile at you that completely turned your insides upside down and started towards the entrance. You stood there watching him leave and maybe would have stayed there to wait for him to return on that very same spot when -
"Fuck..." Ekko mumbled suddenly as he stopped. "I'm not leaving without this." he turned back to face you and grabbed the back of your neck with both of his hands. He pulled you closer and before you could have reacted otherwise (not that you'd ever wanted to), his lips were on yours and well - you were in heaven. The world stopped existing around you as you closed your eyes and kissed him back, your arms slowly wrapping around his neck on their own.
His lips were soft and warm against yours. All your nerves concentrated on was the feeling, trying to memorize the moment, to carve it into the convolutions of your brain for eternity... It felt like millions of butterflies dancing inside your stomach and your chest wanted to explode under the warmness.
You felt his thumb stroke your jawbone and your arms tightened around his neck before his lips left yours. The strange feeling inside your heart, that you had already felt earlier, still in your room, was there again as he looked into your surprised eyes.
He kissed you. He really did. Your mind tried to process what just happened before the unpleasant feeling inside your guts dragged you back to reality.
"Just - just take care, okay?" you asked him which he only smiled at.
"Okay." he placed one list kiss onto your forehead before letting you go completely to walk towards the entrance of the firelight base. And you just stood there on your own, watching the three of them leave, but only really noticing one figure of the trio.
And the cold feeling deep inside your stomach didn't want to leave, even when Scar rolled the huge door back to its place...
