No wind could ever blow so deep down in Zaun. It was simply impossible. The first time you had ever felt a breeze against your skin was when you stepped outside of the room in which you'd first talked to Ekko... And that could only mean one thing.
Someone was at your doorstep. Doors didn't just open themselves.
You left the hoverboard on the ground, carefully stepping over the device as you made your way back to see who was your visitor. You were glad that it was dark in the building, helping you hide your figure from whoever decided to peek on you. You felt your pulse rise as you pulled yourself against the wall and tried to have a glance at your entrance door. But just before you would have moved to lean out and take a look, you heard a mumbling voice so unearthy, it immediately sent a shiver down your spine.
No other voice you'd ever heard in your life sounded like that...
"I... know... this... smell..." you heard the words being forcefully pressed. It sounded like the - thing - had trouble with speaking.
Your whole body froze against the wall as your mind desperately tried to find an escape route for you. Whatever that creature was, based on its voice, you were sure you wouldn't want to meet it face to face... Your eyes fell onto the hoverboard lying on the ground.
Could it still fly? Or would you just sign your death penalty if you tried to use it for fleeing?
You heard a heavy step towards your direction and your whole body shook as it scared the living soul out of you.
"I - I know...you..." the creature talked again. But why was it talking about knowing you? The thinking part of your brain wanted you out of the building as fast and as far as possible.
But you had also had an unhealthy amount of curiosity inside you...
You blamed your parents for that. They had tried to hide you in this very room all of your life. It was natural in your case that you craved to know and see more... right? You weren't just rushing yourself into your inevitable end if you had a glance at your visitor... right?
You took a huge breath and held it in as your head slowly and very, very carefully poked out from behind the doorframe of your old living room. But when you finally saw who - or rather what - was standing in the other room, you wished with all your heart that you would have grabbed the hoverboard and left the building instead while you still had the chance...
The creature had human-like traits and yet it was nothing like a human. Its skin was dark, greyish-purple and thick veins webbed its whole body. His whole figure seemed to be distorted and you could see in the way the beast was standing that it was probably in constant pain. It held its limbs in a strange, cramped up position and the way it kept moaning with its every breath also indicated the constant suffering...
But when it looked your way, it was its eyes that scared you the most. They were glowing purple and sharp but the most frightening was that, in a way, they seemed familiar...
"What the..." you breathed your words and before you could have noticed what you were doing you stepped out from behind your cover to take a better look. You would recognize those eyes anywhere and anytime... But it was impossible... It couldn't be...
The creature noticed you.
Its eyes flew right onto yours and for a second it just stood there and watched you, breathing fast and heavy only a few steps away from you. Your heart pounded against your chest crazily and your head felt dizzy. You wanted to step closer to it but the moment your body moved, it roared up.
"You!" its hoarse voice growled and immediately jumped towards you. You felt its clawed hand tearing your skin on your neck as you fell back but your body acted on its own as you jumped right back up. You heard the creature fell against the doorframe - it was too small for him to be able to follow you without getting stuck. You grabbed the hoverboard still lying on the ground and jumped to your window to break the glass with it.
You placed the device onto the doorframe and climbed on it, stepping onto the pedal to start it up right away. But it wouldn't...
"Oh, no... no,no, no..." you cried as you looked behind yourself, only to see the beast freeing itself from the doorframe. Your heart gave a leap as you heard it roar another time, sending shivers down your spine. You kicked the pedal a second and third and god only knows how many other times and just when you felt the hands of the creature against your back, the hoverboard finally started and you shot towards the sky.
The distorted, angry howl accompanied you for long minutes. It stuck inside your brain, bumping around your skull as you trembled on the hoverboard, instinctively flying back to the only safe place you knew... You couldn't get the image of those eyes out of your head. Those eyes belonged to...
But how?
You flew for long, long minutes above Zaun and you still couldn't calm yourself. On the contrary, you felt all your limbs trembled more with each passing second as your mind kept replaying what had happened back at your old home. You weren't even sure how you got back to the entrance of the firelight base because all you could see in front of your eyes were the purple irises holding onto yours. Why did it feel like they were asking for... help?
You realized you had been standing in front of the huge, round door for long minutes now, dragging the hoverboard after you on the ground.
You took one, huge breath.
The fact that Ekko, the only person in the world who had managed to calm your soul, change your views and help you finally stop hiding, wouldn't be behind the door anymore hit you again, and you felt that everything was too much for you...
And yet, you leaned against the door, trying to open it up on your own.
You thought about how you'd said Ekko that you'd help around the firelights while he was away... That was the only reason why you wouldn't turn your back on the door now.
The piece of metal was damn heavy and now that the adrenaline was starting to leave your organs, you felt the extreme tiredness and pain all over your body. No matter how hard you tried to move the door, you couldn't so you just gave up and banged your fists against the cold metal, hoping that someone would hear you soon.
Only a few seconds had to pass and you already heard familiar rumblings of the entrance opening up. In the doorway, Scar's face greeted you and you just stood there looking at the enormous firelight.
"Y/N?" you heard your name coming from a familiar voice. Your heart started beating faster as your eyes desperately searched for the source. Were you hallucinating? Wouldn't be surprising after everything you had seen today... Maybe you had gotten unused to the gases that filled the lowest lanes..
But then Scar stepped away, and there he was. With a crutch under his right armpit and a few a bruises along his body, but it was Ekko. And he seemed so real...
You dropped the hoverboard from your hand and climbed over the entrance right away, but you stopped when you got only a step away from the boy. You wanted to talk but you couldn't push any words out of your mouth. You just watched him, trying to fully get that he was alive and he really stood in front of you as he looked back at you, with an equally confused and worried expression on his face.
You felt a lump forming inside your throat and your whole body was trembling - you were on the verge of crying and even your legs wanted to give in under you. You were sure you would have collapsed to the ground soon. And then - Ekko hugged you.
He squeezed you to his chest, with one arm around your shoulder and a palm against your head and you immediately felt a little of your strenght returning to your sore body. You hugged him back trying to swallow back your tears but you simply couldn't stop them...
Seemed like it was the day when the dead came back to life, you thought and you were finally able to talk.
"My brother's alive..."
