"Please, don't go..." you asked Ekko when you saw him open your door. The image of him leaving your little room caused you a smaller flashback, and the last thing you wanted was watching him go. What if this time, you would really never see him again?

The boy looked back at you, hesitation twinkling in his warm, brown eyes. "You should really get some rest." he said but you opposed.

"I know! I will!" you replied quickly. "I just... please..." you felt bad for dragging him back, he probably had tons of things to take care of, especially now that a member of the Piltovian council was there, with the firelights. You made yourself swear in your head that this would be the only occasion he had to spend the night with you. But after today, you really... needed him.

He looked into your begging eyes and he gave himself in with a sigh.

So that was how you both ended up on the top of your small bed, facing each other in the darkness. You both offered to sleep on the floor, but none of you agreed to that...

You could barely see him, but you didn't even need to. You were just happy for having his presence by your side as the two of you were talking in a low voice.

There was complete silence around you making you feel like the whole world was asleep, except the two of you. Even the tree's leaves were completely calm - you couldn't hear any rustling at all. You felt isolated at that moment, as if only the two of you existed and your tiny room.

"My theory is that, your brother was near a greater amount of shimmer when the explosion happened." Ekko said after a while. It was good to hear that he didn't believe your brother was some kind of an addict... Because he wasn't." I think it got into his body and modified him somehow - and also kept him alive..."

Your feelings were mixed. On one hand, you were beyond happy that he was alive - but on the other, the picture of his distorted, bestial self still haunted you every time you closed your eyes... Ekko saw your rushing thoughts, probably evincing on your face, because he reached his hand out to place it on top of yours, that had been resting between the two of you.

"We'll find your brother." he said and squeezed your hand, making your chest warm up instantly.

"What if I'm not strong enough to heal him?" you whispered the question that had been bugging you for hours now. You'd never tried to heal anything close to your brother's... condition? Could it be called that? What if he was too far gone to ever turn him back...

"Then we'll find another way." Ekko said simply, without hesitation. You looked into his eyes, twinkling back at you in the darkness and you felt safe with him. You believed his words, not just because you wanted to but because you trusted him with all your heart...

But then Jinx came into your mind and you felt your heart tighten. You couldn't help but realize the parallel between your brother and her...

"Do you think she's still in there?" you asked in a low voice, looking away from Ekko's eyes. You felt bad for bringing her up, when you knew it always hurt the boy by your side. You weren't thinking just spoke for which you scolded yourself internally.

"Who?" you heard the confusion in his voice and you finally gathered your courage to look at him, right into his eyes. You saw the puzzled expression under his furrowed brows.

"Your childhood friend... in Jinx." his expression darkened for a second and you saw the hesitation on his face.

"You can talk to me about her." you said, looking at him to reassure that you were also there for him. That he could talk to you and he could ask for your opinion if needed, just like you felt like you could count on him as well... His gaze met yours, but this time he didn't seem angry but rather sad instead, as he chew on his thoughts for long, long seconds.

"I have kept saying that Powder's gone for so long." he said after a while. When he saw your brows running to meet each other he added: "Her name was Powder when we were kids..." you held your breath back as he talked, you were so afraid he'd stopped if you interrupted him in any way.

"When I had to fight her on that bridge, I could have... I could have ended her for good." he said. "But I saw her - in her eyes... and I just couldn't..." you were the one to tighten your grip around his fingers now.

"Because you're a good person." you said immediately. You felt that he thought he was weak for sparing his childhood friend and you didn't want him to believe that. That wasn't the case at all... That meant that he was human. You looked at him and saw him smile gratefully.

He probably had no one to talk to about his feelings all this time... He had to contain everything in himself while staying so strong...

"You know, I think, I just haven't really been able to accept that, the Powder I knew could commit all those things - it... hurts to believe that..." he smiled to himself bitterly and you felt your heart ache as you watched him. Now, with your brother you had an idea what he probably felt, but your case was different... Yes, your brother had also became a monster, but not willingly...

"I'm so sorry..." you whispered. Ekko didn't answer; only pulled himself closer to you and embraced you into a hug. You buried your forehead into his chest and you felt his chin against the top of your head.

You felt your eyes getting heavier as you absorbed his warmness and no matter how hard you wanted to stay awake to be there for him and listen to him more, you felt yourself drifting away...

"Thank you." you heard his voice in the distance but before you could have answered anything, you fell asleep.
