XXIII. Better Man

WHEN Gold's eyes fluttered open, all that happened last night came to her in a rush. Hindi niya mapigilang maramdaman muli ang kirot sa damdamin niya nang maalala ang sinabi ni Vaughn. It was something that she never expected to hear from him because God knows how much Gold believes that Vaughn understands and trusts her, but then it happened.

It hurt her so deeply. It hurt her heart. It felt like she was punched in the gut and slapped on the face. That was how painful it is for Gold.

She checked the time on the clock on her bedside table and saw it was only six in the morning, but she decided to get up. Hindi na siya makakatulog ulit, isa pa'y gusto niyang malaman kung talagang nanatili nga ba si Vaughn sa mansion o umuwi rin sa huli.

Last night, Vaughn still checked up on her when she went to bed. Sumilip ito sa kwarto niya para tignan kung ano ang kanyang lagay. Gold acted like she was asleep to wait for Vaughn's next actions, and Vaughn went inside her room, sat beside her on the bed, and started caressing her hair.

Narinig pa niyang bumulong ito ng maraming sorry sa kanya, pati na hindi na raw 'yon mauulit at hindi nito ginustong saktan siya. Before he left her room, Vaughn kissed her forehead then went out.

And that brought her to now. Gold brushed her teeth and took a morning bath then decided to go down to eat her breakfast. Upon reaching the kitchen, Gold was taken aback when she saw Vaughn cooking breakfast, his hair arranged in a messy topknot, with nothing but his boxers on. Lumingon ito sa kanya at nahihiyang ngumiti.

"Pasensya na. I have no spare clothes so I had to sleep naked last night," he explained then smiled. "Good morning, Gold. I hope you don't mind that I cooked breakfast."

She smiled slightly at him. "Good morning, Vaughn. It's okay, walang problema sa'kin."

"Go and sit. I'll serve breakfast on the dining table," wika ng binata.

Gold followed him without a word and went to the dining area then sat on a chair in silence. Hinintay niyang dumating si Vaughn na dala dala ang nilutong almusal nito. Naghanda ito ng fried rice, hotdogs, and scrambled eggs. Nagtimpla rin ito ng kape para sa kanya.

"Thank you for preparing our breakfast," mahina niyang sabi habang kumakain sila. Her words broke the silence looming around them.

Vaughn glanced at her then smiled. "No worries. It's my way to make it up to you after..."

"Vaughn..." Gold put her utensils down and looked at him. "Can we not talk about it over breakfast?"

Tumango ang binata saka muli silang nagpatuloy kumain nang tahimik. Gold is ready to talk to him about the incident last night, but not over breakfast. Ayaw niyang mag-usap sila tungkol sa negatibong bagay sa harap ng pagkain dahil para sa kanya ay nakakawala ng respeto 'yon sa grasya sa hapag.

Vaughn volunteered to clean the dining table and wash the dishes even if Gold insisted to do so. Hindi pumayag ang binata kahit anong pilit niya kaya hinayaan na lang niya ito saka umakyat pabalik sa kwarto niya.

When she arrived in her bedroom, Gold sat on the bed and waited for Vaughn in silence. She is expecting him to follow her once he is done in the kitchen. Habang hinihintay niya ang binata ay muli niyang naisip ang mga nangyari kagabi.

Kahit ano pang explanation ang ilatag ng binata sa kanya, nasaktan si Gold nang tunay sa mga sinabi nito. It was insulting and somehow implied that he does not trust her the way she trusts him, and that also hurt her. Naging mahirap nga para sa kanya na magtiwala kay Vaughn nang makipag kompromiso siya rito, pero sa huli'y nagtiwala pa rin siya, tapos ganito ang bumalik.
