Chapter 12: An Attempt

Keres carefully picks up Divoky from the bed and places him inside the basket, then goes for Aldara. The young hybrid stirs, and she sees the griffontaur's eyes glow from her hood and she lets out a high pitch scream, causing Keres to cover her ears, awaking her brother, and alerting her parents and grandparents. Keres grabs Aldara, covering her mouth, and shoves her into the basket, then screeches in pain when something stabbed her shoulder. Josiah had stabbed her with his carving knife, and she slices his chest with her talons and he falls to the floor, panting. Keres escapes through the window and flies outside, Elk and Adalie going after her. Elk jumps and drags Keres down by her tail, making her drop the basket and the twins fall out of it. 

They run to their grandmother and hug her tight, shaking with fear and Keres attacks Elk, holding him by the throat, "Did you miss me?" He growls and grips onto her feathers, pulling at them as she tries flying away and she screeches, "LET GO!" She swipes at his face with her talons and lifts him into the air and drops him hard, then slices his mouth. Elk coughs as he tastes blood in his mouth and he hears a voice, "DADDY!" He looks to see Aldara running to him and he tries to stop her, "Aldara no!" Keres growls and lunges for the child, but misses as Adalie scooped her up just in time, backing away while holding her daughter. Keres glares at her and she starts going to them, "Give...me...THE CHILD!" She pounces at her, then gets blasted away with magic and the centaur shaman holds her staff towards the griffontaur.

Keres growls at the centaurs around her, and she chuckles, looking at Elk, "Mark my words, Nowhere King. I will have your children!" She laughs and a cloud of smoke surrounds her, teleporting her away before Elk could make a move and he catches his breath, spitting out blood. The twins run to their dad and hug him, making sure he was okay, and tears were in their eyes from fear. Elk smiles and he hugs them back, "Are you two okay?" They nod and he gently picks them up, then gets himself to stand on his hooves and Emilia helps Josiah as he holds his wound and Adalie runs to her father and Elk joins her, "Josiah, I-" "Ah I'll be fine. Though she did steal my only carving knife. It's still lodged in her shoulder. Are you okay though? That griffontaur dropped you hard enough to break your neck." 

Elk nods, "I'm okay." He looks at the twins and holds them close, feeling them shake. Adalie kisses their foreheads, and get back inside the cottage. Emilia cleans Josiah's wound and bandages him up and Adalie cleans Elk's lip and calms the twins down. She and Elk hold them, rocking them back and forth, and the twins whimper. Divoky looks up at Adalie, "Mommy? Why was that centaur trying to take us away?...." Adalie's eyes water and hugs him, "I don't know...but you're okay now." The centaur shaman knocks on the door and Emilia lets her in, and she looks around, "Are you all alright?" They nod and the shaman walks to Elk and Adalie and looks at the children, petting their hair, "I don't know how Keres survived the castle falling, but I think she wanted to take the children away to get her revenge on you, Elk." 

Elk looks at her, "But...why the children?" "Taking something you love away....she's planning something. I don't know what, but I don't know if it's safe for your family here..." Josiah and Emilia look at her and Adalie's ears fold back, "You mean we have to move?" The shaman nods, "If you move somewhere else, then it can probably stop Keres for a while...just to keep you and your family safe..." Adalie looks at her parents and Emilia sighs, "We're going with them as well, just in case. I'll help pack." She gets up and helps Adalie pack stuff up and Elk looks down at the ground, holding the twins as they had fallen asleep. The shaman lifts his chin up, "I'm sorry, but we can't risk losing any of you...especially your children..." Elk nods and holds the twins close to him, "I made a promise to them the day they were born and I'm keeping it...even if it kills me...I will NOT let Keres lay a single hand on my children."
