My heart drops and my eyes widen when I hear that sentence come out of this woman's mouth. Not so much because I believe it, but because I never thought a situation like this, true or not, would ever happen to me.
"Excuse me?" I ask. "I'm your mom." She puts her hand over her heart and gets teary eyed. I stay shocked and speechless. "I've come to find you." She smiles big and charmingly with her extremely heavy New York accent.
"Look- I don't know if this is some kind of joke, but I-." She cuts me off. "It's no joke baby." She shakes her head, assuring me. "Oh my..." She says and cups my face, getting a good look at me, but I kind of pull away. "Thank god you don't look like your father." She jokes, trying to lighten the mood.
"I think you should leave. This is not funny." I say, still not believing it. "I'm telling you! I am your mom." She says with hope in her eyes for me to believe her. "You're my mom...?" I ask and she nods continuously.
"Prove it." I cross my arms. "What's my middle name?" I ask. "Lynn." She says without hesitation. "Jennifer Lynn Lopez." She says and My heart starts to pump faster, but I still do not believe this.
"Anyone can look somebody up on Facebook." I scoff. "Here- look, I'll prove it." She says and pulls out her fancy Gucci wallet.
I watch as she pulls out a picture from one of the pockets, and shows it to me. She hands it to me and I slowly take it. "That's me...and little baby you." She says.
The picture is obviously her, just a lot younger, with a baby in her hands, sitting on the front steps to a house.
My mind tells me 'this could just be her with a random baby, she's lying' but that mindset changes when I see what's in my hands in the picture.
My tiny purple bear...the one my birth mother left me with before she gave me up. I still have it. It's under my bed, stored away.
I look back up at her, this time she's crying, and I just can't comprehend this...She really is my mom..
"You grew up to be so gorgeous.." She says shakily. She smiles, making her eyes squint. Now I know why her eyes were so interesting to me when I first opened the door. Mine are exactly the same.
"Could I come in?" She asks, hopeful. "I-I don't know if that's a good idea.." I say and look down.
"I understand hun..." She sighs.
I really don't know what to do. This random lady shows up at my door and tells me that I'm her daughter. I mean- what would you do? This is just all too much. I haven't seen her since I was one. I don't even know who she is, or why she came here. I just don't trust it. But I do believe her. As much as I hate to say it, she is my mother.
"But please, give me a call.." She says and pulls out a pen, taking the picture from my hand and writing her phone number on the back of it, before handing it back to me.
"Maybe we could grab a coffee soon." She tilts her head. "I'd love to explain myself." She says, and I just nod. I'm not so sure about what I should say.
That's when she takes a step back, and I shut the door. What. The. Fuck.
Why-why does my life have to be so random and fucked up in the worst possible ways. I've dreaded this moment all my life. I never wanted to meet my mother. She's always been the terrible bitch in my mind who left me. But...at the same time, Ive also longed for this moment.
I wondered what she looked like, what her perfume smelled like...the color of her eyes...
Now I know the answers to those questions. But that's only three out of the thousands of questions I have. I don't know if I want a relationship with her, but I am so fucking curious about so much.
