Nearly everyone was in bed as you sat in front of the small fire. You held the beer bottle from the top, swinging it back and forth as you stared into the flames.
You looked up to see Mary-Beth and Tilly finally heading to bed, only leaving you, Arthur, John, Bill and Micah. You let out a sigh as you took a sip of your beer.
The leaves crunched behind you and you remained looking forward. "May I?" Arthur's voice came from behind you and you just nodded your head.
Arthur swung his legs over the log, taking a seat right next to you. Your shoulders were touching as he lifted his glass of whiskey to his mouth.
"You look unhappy for someone who succeeded." Arthur raised his eyebrows as he turned his head to look at you. "I've just got a lot on my mind." You shrugged your shoulders as you finished off your beer. "Like what?" Arthur set down his glass and put his full attention on you.
"It don't matter." You set your beer next to Arthur's glass and got comfortable on the log. "Arthur?" You asked as your hands began to shake. "What is it?" Arthur was calm as he looked at you, trying to read your face.
"You ever think about loving someone again?" You could feel yourself getting anxious as you spoke to him. "Yeah. Why?" Arthur spoke quietly and you tried to gather your words. "I-I just I don't know." You felt Arthur's hand slide into yours as he gradually got closer to you.
His other hand was brought up to hold your chin, gently turning your head towards him. You couldn't think as your lips connected with his.
You closed your eyes, allowing Arthur to pull him closer to you. You brought your hand up to graze his cheek, the small spikes of facial hair piercing your skin.
Your lips moved with his until you felt him slightly pull away. You smiled as you pulled away from his lips, his hand still holding onto yours.
"Finally." You breathed out as you relaxed, looking into Arthur's eyes. "Oh shut up." Arthur pulled his hand away from your chin and ruffled the top of you head. "I'll see you in the morning, sweetheart." With that Arthur stood up, walking towards his tent and leaving you at the fire alone. You sat there in silence as you watched Arthur disappear into his tent.
Sweetheart. Your eyes rang as you replayed the sound of Arthur's voice. It had a nice ring to it.
