As time went on, your wound slowly healed, almost fully closed up, just leaving the scar in its place. You mostly did the chores around the camp, taking any bit of work you could in order to make sure you kept your place there.
The women were nice to you, always making sure to chat, especially Karen and Mary-Beth. Sadie was always cracking jokes about the others with you, but Ms. Grimshaw was a different situation.
It didn't take long for you to realize why everyone bad mouthed her, but she probably had good intentions. It had only been about a week or so since you had joined the camp, and yet it felt like home.
You had finished filling up the tub at Pearson's station when Arthur had approached you. You could only see him out of the corner of your eyes, but you were surprised to see him and not Sean bugging you again.
"You trying to sneak up on me?" You turned around, leaning your back not the table in front of Pearson's.
"Sorry Miss, I was sent to grab you for an errand." He scratched the back of his neck as he avoided looking into your eyes. "Great. I'm sick of doing chores here." You smiled as you walked away from the table with Arthur.
"It's just a small errand, nothing special." He led you over to the wagon that already had horses tied onto the front. Arthur grabbed your hand, helping you up into the seat of the wagon. You quickly scooted over as Arthur hoisted himself up into the seat. He grabbed onto the reins and looked to you to make sure you were settled, before he whipped the reins.
"We going to Valentine or something?" You relaxed in the wagon as you began to leave the camp. "Just to get some supplies, that's all." Arthur kept his eyes on the road as you went down the trail in the woods.
"I haven't gotten to talk to you much this past week." You turned to the man, your eyes traveling over his face. You hadn't noticed two small scars on his chin, along with the one on the top of his nose.
"Whatever will get me out of camp I guess." You leaned your elbow on the arm of the wagon seat and propped your head up with your hand. "Will I get you go on the good trips?" You asked lazily, staring at the grass moved by. "Whatcha mean by good trips?" Arthur raised his eyebrows as he looked over at you. "I mean like the heists, robberies, that sorta stuff." You removed your head from your hand to look at Arthur.
"You gotta be patient kiddo. Do well on this job and I'll put in a good word for ya." He chuckled a little bit, which brightened you up. You hadn't seen him laugh or smile a lot, so it was refreshing. "It's just collecting supplies." You tilted your head back to look up at the clouds above you. They were moving slowly with the wind. supplies." You tilted your head back to look up at the clouds above you.
The rest of the ride was quiet, with Arthur focusing on the road and you focusing on all the animals you passed by on the plains. Valentine wasn't too far from the camp, but you'd never gone outside the camp since you were brought there, so you didn't realize how close it was. It was busy as usual during the middle of the day.
There were lots of people wandering the streets or sitting on the porches of shops. "We just gotta stop at the general store. I'll buy the stuff and you'll help load." Arthur slowed down the wagon as you approached the small shop at the corner of the street. He hopped off the wagon, making sure his gun was secured in his holster. "Just give a shout if you have any issues." Arthur hit the side of the wagon and walked off towards the general goods store.
You sat there patiently as you watched the people pass by the wagon. There was an occasional glance over at you, but no one you recognized. It didn't take long for Arthur to come back out, holding a couple of stacked crates. There were a few of the store workers walking behind him, carrying the rest of the crates. The workers set them down on the ground and you hopped off the wagon.
Arthur opened up the back of the wagon, loading the boxes in. You grabbed a crate one by one, handing them off to Arthur for him to put in the back. "You alright with those crates?" Arthur asked as he grabbed them from you, strategically stacking them in the back. "What do you mean, am I alright? You don't think I can carry some crates?" You handed him off the last crate and made your way back to the seat of the wagon. "I was just making sure. Don't get all angry with me now." Arthur pulled himself back into the wagon, a faint smile forming in his face.
"I'll have you know Mr. Morgan that I did all this by myself for years. I can handle some light crates." You nudged the man and he slightly jumped at the contact. "I'm sorry Miss, I no mean to offend ya." He looked over at you with guilty eyes, but you just chuckled. "I'm just kidding with you Mr. Morgan and quit calling me Miss. Just call me Y/N." You slumped back in the wagon as Arthur took the reins once again.
"Alright Y/N, then quit calling me Mr. Morgan and call me Arthur." He brought the reins down in the horses and the wagon began to move again.
You kept watching of the plains as you made your way back to camp. Something felt off, but it always did when you were in a wide open area. "Arthur, someone's watching us." You looked around to see several figures standing a ways away. "I'll keep driving, I'm trusting you to shoot." Arthur looked out of the corner of his eyes to see the men making their way towards the wagon. "Damn O'Driscolls." He muttered under his breath as you slowly took out your revolver, making sure it was fully loaded.
"Just keep the wagon straight." You smiled as you sat up in the seat and turned back to look at the men. "Don't worry about me Miss Y/N." The wagon began to speed up, along with the men following eight behind you. You lined up your revolver, holding it steady and began to shoot at the men. Once you started shooting, they began shooting. You kept your head low as you sent shot after shot after the men.
One of the men fell off his horse, dangling from the stirrups. His body was dragged through the sandy ground for a bit before his horse came to a stop. There were only two guys left, easy enough for you. You focused on the one closest to you. His shots were just whizzing by your head. You remained calm as you pulled the trigger of your revolver, sending buckets right into the guys chest. He slumped over on his horse, leaving only one guy.
"Just one more to go." You said proudly as you finished off the last guy, sending bullets flying towards his head. You relaxed and sat back down in the seat of the wagon, putting up your revolver and looking at Arthur. "Nice shooting lady." Arthur quickly looked behind him to see the bodies of the men disappearing. "Thank you." You once again slumped back down in your seat as the wagon passed into the woods. "I say we make a good team, Arthur. Just leave the shooting to me." You patted him on his shoulder, earning a glare from him. "Yeah right." He rolled his eyes as he slowed down the horses to pass through the woods.
"Thank you for bringing me out. I enjoyed it." The wagon entered the clearing of the camp and Arthur brought it to a stop. "Don't thank me. I'll just put in that good word to Dutch." Arthur tipped his dark hat and hopped off the wagon. "How was the wagon ride?" Lenny came up to the wagon, letting the horses as he looked at you. "Fine, just an encounter with the O'Driscolls." You hopped off the wagon, Lenny holding your held to help you down. "Arthur give you any trouble?" He looked to the man as he began unloading the crates with the help of Sean. "No, he was fine." You smiled as you watched his place the crates next to Pearson.
You shook your head, turning your attention away from Arthur and back to Lenny. "I sure hope I can join y'all on the exciting runs." You walked off with Lenny towards the small center table. "We'll see what Micah thinks of a woman joining the heists." Lenny laughed as he sat down at the table with you, folding his arms and resting his head. "Screw him. As long as Dutch says I can go, I'm going."
