The meadow stretched long and wide. It was as if time itself had stopped and somehow the tide of time had been turned. He stood there under a lone tree. The breeze blew past the flowers which dotted the meadow, carrying little dandelion fluffs along with it. Pleasant weather, with the slow-moving clouds along with the soft chirping of a pair of sparrows and the sound of leaves rustling, would have tempted anyone to lay back and relax, but not him. He looked around, wondering where he was and where he had been before.
In the distance, he saw a figure waving at him. His hazy eyes strained to seek out the person, but he could only see the bare minimum. His curiosity to know about that figure surpassed his confusion. He closed his eyes, then drew in a deep breath. Hesitantly, he let go of the tree which he had been leaning on, hoping that her tired broken feet would carry his weight. When nothing terrible had occurred, he opened his eyes. To her surprise, his legs were stronger and younger than before. He took a few tentative steps, but his legs didn't give away. Childish joy consumed him and he began running. The dew which covered every single blade of grass, soaked into his dress. He ran exuberantly, thinking how long it had been since he was able to move on her own. It seemed as though he were in the summer of her youth, twirling in the meadow without any care.
Suddenly, all the happiness inside him seemed to have drained from his being. He slumped to the ground, his body feeling a thousand times heavier. The chirping of birds was replaced by the crash of lightning and thunder. The brook which ran by had become a ravine with a raging flood. The meadow which was covered in flowers had been dramatically altered into a lifeless plain. He looked around for something that would protect her from the raging storm. Nothing.
A dense fog was forming and she couldn't locate anything. He was already soaked to his bone and shivers ran throughout his body. Breathing had become a difficulty due to the increased humidity. He crawled forward -hoping to reach the figure he had seen before- and gasped when the cold drops pierced his back. 'Help' he cried, but his voice was barely a whisper. It felt like the storm was beating down on him, forcing him to give up. And he did.
His hands went slack and he slammed face-first on the ground. Bitter memories filled his mind, wrapping her in sorrow. 'If only had I been quicker she would still be with me' he thought. His mind wandered to their times together. She had always been there for him, always had his back, always rushing to protect him. He had been hiding from those memories for so long that he didn't realise what he really felt. But the storm reminded him.
He clenched his fists and stood up straight against the wind. The anger and pain he had boxed away along with her memories were out now. The sound of his teeth gnashing against each other was heard even in the downpour. 'Why would you save me?!' he screamed. He looked up to the sky, seeking an answer. The rain washed away his tears, and gradually the clouds cleared out. In place of the rain, there was snow falling.
All the burden he felt moments ago was gone as if someone removed them from his shoulders. His plainclothes were dry, but it was too thin to keep out the cold. Like before there wasn't anything around, just a vast plain covered in snow. But that figure he had seen earlier stood there. He could make out that it was actually a girl who was standing in the distance.
With no other option, he trudged his way through the snow towards that person. His sleeveless shirt barely kept out the cold. His arms were growing colder, his fingers already numb, but he kept moving. His breath came out as white puffs of smoke. He tried rubbing his arms for warmth but to no avail. He kept moving, his eyes trained on the ground. It seemed like he had walked for hours when he saw something peculiar. Amidst all that snow, a small dandelion had poked out. The sight of that single dandelion stirred something inside him.
He put her bare hands into the freezing snow and cleared a small patch around the dandelion. Such a trivial act made him happy, but when he looked up - his face became ghastly pale.
A wave of emotions hit her. Happiness? Sadness? Fear? Guilt? Anger? But it didn't matter. Tripping over, he ran to the girl. His cheeks burned but he didn't stop. The cold air pierced through his airways yet he kept running. When he was just inches away, he stopped.
He stared at the ground. 'Why save me?' he asked.
'Well you asked me to watch over you,' the other replied with a smirk.
He couldn't stand still anymore. He closed the few inches between them and wrapped his arms around the girl. 'Baka Rin' he sobbed. The cold he felt earlier vanished. He held on tight to Rin. All those decades he spent hiding from his feelings finally came to an end. He cried away all those tears he had held back. His safe place.
Rin smiled. 'I missed you too Obito.'
