My mom drove us to some fifties diner. We were sat imediatly at a booth next to a window and worn red seats. There was even a tiny jukebox sitting on the table with a slot for quarters to play old songs. To my surprise there was actually some modern day pop songs!

"Now I'll be your server today," said the woman with a light pink dress, white apron, and hair poofed up on top of her head as she handed us plastic menus, "My name is Caroline, can I start ya'll off with some drinks?"

"Just water for me!" Mom answered, looking through her menu. Eli nudged me and cleared his throat.

"Oh, right, do you want lemonade? Or soda? Its a Pepsi place, not Coke." I asked him.

"Lemonade."

"Okay, we both want lemonade then."

"Two lemonades and a water..." Caroline repeated to herself, writing on her little yellow note pad. "Alright! I'll be right back to take your order!" She smiled and strutted off to the counter where you could see the chefs cooking.

"What is there?" Eli asked, blankly staring forward.

"Pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, waffles-"

"Stop right there. Waffles? What kind?"

"Plain, straw berry banana, cinnamon roll, chocolate-"

"I know what I'm getting then! Chocolate chip pancakes are the obvious choice!"

"Alright then, remember that yourself." I started studying the menu, searching for anything that looked appetizing. There was so much it was insane! I finally decided on strawberry banana pancakes.

"Do you boys want me to get a plate of bacon for the table?" Mom asked.

"Of course!" I excited.

"Yes please, ma'am!" Eli replied, as smooth as ever. Not long after, Caroline was back with our drinks.

"Are ya'll ready to order or do you need a couple more minutes?"

"I think we're good." I replied, smirking up at her to see if I could be as smooth as Eli.

"Well alright, how about we start out with you then sir, what'll you have?"

"Banana pancakes please."

"Any sides with that?" She asked, not looking up from what she was writing on her yellow order pad.

"Oh...uhh..." I thought for a moment, not realizing we could choose a side. "Hash browns?"

"Alright, and how about you young man?" Caroline leaned to the side to get a better look at Eli, who continued to stare blankly at the red padded seat mom was sitting in across from him. I nudged him and he looked around, as if he'd just regained consciousness into reality.

"Dude, she'd talking to you. What do you want?" I nudged him again.

"Chocolate chip waffles and french toast for me!" He turned his head towards me and half smiled, tilting his head slightly trying to look cute.

Caroline smiled back at him, "I'll make sure you get that then!" She giggled and blew him a kiss. "How about you ma'am?"

"An egg sandwich with spinach please." Mom ordered, collecting our menus and handing them back to Caroline. She ripped a piece of paper off the pad and walked back towards the counter, clipping it to an order board.

"So what did you boys do last night?" Mom asked.

"Oh, you know, hang around." I answered, trying not to smile while thinking about seeing dad and learning so much about Eli and his history. I could tell Eli was thinking about the same thing just by looking at his face.

"I may not be able to see," Eli started, "but the way Jared described it and just by meeting you and learning your magnificent personality, I could tell it must've been lovely!"

"Oh, why thank you!" Mom giggled like a little school girl, "Eli, you are going to have no problem meeting the right girl!"

"All due respect ma'am, I don't think that'll be a problem." I smirked at him and he half smiled back.

"Jared, I am so glad you're making such great friends!"

"And I'm glad I got the opportunity to become friends with such a great young man! Thank you for doing such an outstanding job raising him to be the well adjusted young go getter he is today!" Eli smiled at mom, resulting in more giggles.

"Eli, you are too much!" She giggled.

"Yeah, Eli. You are being just too much." By this time, Caroline was back with a big black serving tray holding all of our food. She placed it on a nearby table and started distributing our food.

"Enjoy!" She smiled, taking the tray back and leaving us too eat.

"Drat! I forgot about the bacon!" Mom realized.

"It's fine mom, we have plenty to eat!" I gestured towards the huge portions sitting on the table in front of us. Immediately, Eli and I started eating, but mom didn't.

"I have some amazing news!" Mom said, a huge smile bursting on her face. I looked up at her, continuing to eat.

"Adam proposed last night!" She squealed, clasping her hands together with so much pleasure you could smell it. I stopped, mouth hanging open, the piece of pancake I'd just put in my mouth dropping to the plate, along with my fork. Eli had a similar reaction, staring forward, mouth slightly open, and fork frozen mid way between his plate and face. We stayed in our awkward pause until mom's face finally fell to a concerned frown.

"Jared? Are you okay?"

"Oh, uh, yeah, just...don't you think this is a little sudden? Like you're rushing things?" I finally spoke up.

"Of coarse not, silly! We've been seeing each other for a long time now, in fact, I think it's just in time! Isn't this great?"

"Yeah...great..."

"Don't you see? We're going to finally have a nice loving family! All together! You, me, and Adam! Aren't you happy for us?"

"Well..." I trailed off, searching for the words but failing to find any. I looked around everywhere except mom's face as if I could find an answer there but of coarse I didn't find anything. My chest hurt as I felt it fill with anxiety, my heart pounding rapidly. Of all people, why did it have to be Adam?!

"I think I can explain," Eli finally put a halt to his waffles and piped up, "I, too, have never met my father and live with a step dad. Jared's probably feeling anxious and a little scared about how this will effect your lives. Right Jared?" He asked. I nodded, disappointment welling up inside. I knew that was a lie, and so did he. I knew the real reason, but I couldn't ask her to give dad another chance and I can't tell her about how awful Adam is, she'd never believe me and what kind of son would I be to destroy her happiness? The only thing left to ask is how will I get out of this?
