The Way Things Should Be

"C'mon! You're going to be late!" Dad called from the bottom of the steps. 

"Coming!" I rushed down the steps, pulling my white sweatshirt over my head as quickly as possible, not minding what it would do to my hair. I met him at the front door where he was holding his keys, ready to go.

"Bye honey!" He called into the kitchen.

"Bye mom!" 

"Bye guys!" Mom emerged from the kitchen, holding the little bundle of joy named Amelia, bouncing her gently as she giggled.

"Oh, by the way! Happy anniversary!" Dad crossed the hallway and kissed mom.

"Happy anniversary! I can't believe it's already been a year!" Mom smiled brightly.

"Alright, I better get to work. Jack will have my head if I'm late. You reunite a guy with his estranged son at your impromptu wedding and you think he'd be more great full!" Dad joked.

"Well, someone has to do autopsies! And when Jack is done, he needs you to help him identify the murder victim!" 

"Oh my gosh guy," I groaned, "most kids complain about their parents saying mushy stuff on their anniversary, not talking about a dead guys mushy stuff!"

"Alright, lets go!" Dad laughed and rubbed my head, opening the door. On the other side, Jenna stood there, one fist up about to knock on the door, suddenly embarrassed.

"Oh, uh, hey Jared. Um...do you, maybe, want to walk to school together?" She asked, her hair covering her red face.

"Oh, uh, yeah. Yeah! Definitely!" I answered, walking past dad. "Bye guys!" I called behind myself as dad went from the door to his car. Jenna and I made our way down the side walk, laughing and joking. Everything is right now. All my life, I've had to live one big secret. Wishing for something that could never be.

I was wrong. It could be.

I've never been more happy to be wrong, because nothing has ever been so right.
