"Jared?" Startled, I jerked my head up from the paper I was writing at the sound of my name. It was just my home room teacher. "I need you to go with this young man." He gestured towards the curly haired ginger standing next to him. I stood up and walked out the door behind him.
We walked down the sterile tiled hall in silence. He just kept walking as I stayed a few steps behind. We turned a corner where we saw Jenna, but she refused to make eye contact with me, which seamed more strange than usual.
Finally, the ginger stopped at a door and opened it slowly. He held the door, but didn't continue in. It was a room I'd never been to before. All the lights were out except for some lamps illuminating in the small room. There was a desk with a young woman sitting behind it, furiously writing something down. I cleared my throat awkwardly, startling her as she looked up from her work.
"Oh! You must be Jared! Go on, pull up a seat!" She said, pointing to the deep purple living room chair in front of her desk. I sat down and examined the room silently.
"Jared, do you know why you're here?" Asked the honey blonde woman sitting behind the desk.
"No. I don't even know where I am."
"Oh, in that case, I'm Ms.Smith, the school's counselor!" She reached her arm across the desk. To be polite, I shook her hand, still confused about why I was sitting there talking to her.
"Now, do you know why you're here?" She repeated. I shook my head, waiting for her to tell me. "Well, an anonymous student came to me this morning saying she was concerned about you." Still silent, confusion was all I felt. Obviously it was displayed on my face when she continued to explain, "This is about the incident on Friday night..."
"I think you have the wrong guy, I was hanging out with my friend all night on Friday."
"Someone came in saying they saw you standing on your roof with a blind friend. They told me the blind friend had grabbed onto your back and fallowed you onto the roof. Your friend said you were 'going through something', would you like to tell me about that?"
"Oh, uh..." I started fidgeting and sweating uncontrollably. Who would do this to me?
"Just remember, this is a safe environment and anything said here will not leave this room unless you're a danger to yourself or others."
"It wasn't anything. It was just..." think for some lie to tell, I suddenly blurted out "I never met my father and my window was open and wind took an old note from him that blew on the roof. I got upset about it so my friend went with me to get it back." It wasn't a complete lie, but it was still a lie. With tight lips, Ms. Smith turned to her computer. The only noise was the clacking of the computer keys as they clacked away on the keyboard in front of her.
"What does this note say?" She turned back to me. Crap! What should it say?
"It was just telling me about how he had to leave and he would miss me and everything..." I couldn't stop kicking my own foot because of my unbearable restlessness.
"Can you quote it for me?"
"Dear Jared," I spouted off before even thinking about it, "I'm sorry, but I cannot stay to see you grow up, but I must go. I have no doubts that your mother will do an amazing job raising you. I will regret every minute I cannot be with you, but I think this note is necessary so you can still have a piece of me left. Love, dad." More clacking of the keyboard.
"What is your mother and father's relationship?"
"Uh, I don't really know...she...she doesn't talk about him, ever."
"Do you have a step-father?"
"I'm about to." I stopped my self from groaning so I could leave sooner.
"What is your relationship with him?"
"We get along fine."
"Does any one else live in your house? Like a sibling, or a family member, or even a room mate?"
"It's just me and mom." I slouched down in the seat, confidant that I was almost done."
"Jared, since someone was concerned about your life, we've called your mother in to ask her some questions." I froze. Mom? MOM?! Why would they do this?
"I thought this was a safe environment!" I gripped the arms of the chair and stood myself up. "I'm sorry, but I just told you, I'm fine. I really am! So if you'll excuse me, I need to go back to cla-"
"Jared, sit down." Mom said, walking through the door. You could basically smell the worried vibes emitting from her. Her eyes were red as if she'd been crying and there were red streaks running down her cheeks from tears that were no longer there. "May I please have a word with my son in private?"
"Sure. All the time you need!" Ms. Smith moved some papers on her desk and walked across the room. "Just call me when you're done."
I looked down at my shoes as mom pulled up a chair. I heard the sliding of the feet come towards me and the door creaked shut behind Ms. Smith. I didn't want to talk. I didn't want to be here. For a minute I even wish I had jumped while I was up there so I didn't have to be stuck here.
"Why were you up on the roof on Friday?" She sounded angry. I didn't answer, too busy studying ever outline on my dirty worn black converse.
"Jared?" What should I tell her? What could I tell her? I knew for sure that if I told her the truth she would freak out, but there where no lies that would keep me out of trouble.
"Jar-"
"I just wanted to see dad!" I burst, still avoiding eye contacts. I turned my head in every direction but my mom's.
"What?" She gasped. "Why would you ever want to see that...that...that monster?!"
"He is not a monster mom! He's a really good guy!"
"Honey, he's a famous serial killer!"
"He's trying mom! He wants to change!"
"People don't change honey! Not that he's even a person!"
"You're not even giving him a chance! He wants to change! He's trying! He's doing this for us!"
"He can't do anything for us!"
"He wants to be there for me mom! He wants to see me do well! He wants to see me grow up and succeed in life! He wants me to be happy!"
"You think I don't? I spend so much time keeping you away from him so you can be happy! Do you want to know what he wants to see you 'succeed' in? Murder!"
"You don't know him at all mom!" By now I was up pacing the room. My voice was so angry you'd think I was about to actually murder someone.
"I did know him. I knew him longer than you. I loved him! But I loved you more! That's why I left him! For you!"
"You don't know him anymore mom! I can't keep doing this!" I flung the door open effortlessly and ran through all the way to the front doors of the school. They were locked so students couldn't just leave without a key pass or going to the office. I had no more control. No more thoughts of my own. It was as if my life had become a movie and I had to wait patiently to see the end of it.
Before I knew what was happening, I heard glass shatter. The doors. I had kicked it out so all the pieces spread on the tile floor. What was even going on? What was I going to do next? Why can't I decide on my own?
I was down the street running, struggling for consciousness. I was in and out, black invading my whole view. I didn't know where I was going until I saw Eli's house. I ran right past it and into the woods. I felt my head hit something solid, but I had blacked out before I could feel myself hit the ground. I couldn't hear. I couldn't see. Only think, and wonder what I could be doing.
