XXX • Novus Amicus • A New Friend
"Good luck, Harry," I said as I passed him in the Great Hall. "I'm sure you'll do great."
"Thanks," he said, not looking away from his Firebolt, which was laid on the Gryffindor table.
With a chuckle, I joined the rest of the professors at the head table, grabbing myself a cup of tea and a piece of toast.
"I hate to say it, Filius, but I can't see Ravenclaw winning when Harry has a Firebolt," Remus said to Professor Flitwick, placing his hand on the man's back sympathetically.
"Cho Chang is an excellent seeker," Flitwick said.
"I'm sure she is," Remus replied with a grin that disappeared as he saw me.
"Good morning," I said and smiled at him.
"Morning," he said, looking back to Flitwick. From beside me, Snape let a quiet chuckle escape his lips.
"Don't you sit with Lupin anymore?" he asked.
"I wasn't aware seats were assigned," I said and took a sip of my tea.
"And I wasn't aware I had been mistaken in believing you two were quite literally attached at the hip," he said. "It seems strange seeing you without him in tow."
"Did I do something to offend you?" I asked and set my cup down.
"I only wish you would have chosen another seat. I understand there's trouble in paradise, but there are plenty of seats open without Lupin on their side."
I wrinkled my nose as he stood and left the table, his cloak billowing behind him as he exited the Great Hall.
"Don't mind him," Professor Sprout said. "He takes a bit to warm up to people."
"It's been months," I said.
"Severus is one of those people you should never seek to impress," she said. "Are you going to the game today?"
"I am," I said and finished my tea. "Are you?"
"Of course. I don't like to miss any of the games," she said. "It's not as cold as the last game."
"I guess I'll see you there, then?" I said and stood up from my seat.
Professor Sprout nodded. I smiled at her and decided to go back to my room. Now, I regretted not getting to be more friendly with some of the other professors. Had I known Remus was going to stop talking to me, I would have put more time into other relationships.
Back in my room, I made sure to dress warmer than I had for the last game, and at quarter to eleven, I joined the other professors in the stands.
"It's a lot nicer out here than last time," I said as I sat, listening as a couple of the professors muttered agreement. I chewed on my lip and took my seat, feeling out of place. I could hear small conversations surrounding me, every person seemingly having someone else to talk to.
I watched as Remus climbed the stand, his eyes scanning over the teacher's section. He walked past me and sat beside Professor Flitwick, with whom he immediately began a conversation.
"Can I sit here?" I looked up to see Professor Baker, the Muggle Studies teacher.
"Oh, sure," I said and slid over. "I haven't seen you in a while. How was your holiday break?"
"It was excellent," he said. "I went back home and got to see my family. Did you make any use of the televisions over break?"
"I did," I said. "Thank you again for that."
