In a lot of societies, there are "medicine men," people who are like doctors but also help with any ailment such as unhappiness (these are called shamanic societies). If you come to this medicine person or shaman because you are depressed, dispirited, downhearted, etc, they will ask you something along the lines of these four questions:
"-When did you stop dancing?
-When did you stop singing?
-When did you stop being enchanted by stories
-When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?
Where we have stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experience a loss of the soul.
Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are the four salves of the soul."
(Quote from Project Happiness)
Those are four ways we can heal ourselves when we are sad. I can't put it as beautifully as Project Happiness does, but there's the base of it.
