Hugo's POV:
•••
Damn.
What a way to wake up.I sat staring at the fire I had started, watching as the sparks broke into small flames, the smell of smoke and wood filling my senses.
I had somehow fallen asleep, and was now awake in the godforsaken morning worried as I let Varian go earlier.
He had been crying, shaking, and angrily ripping pages out of his little journal.
Which I now had by my side along with the wadded pieces of paper to give to him later.I poked the fire with a bigger stick, letting the fire burn it's way better and faster. I then grabbed the cooking kettle we lugged around and cooked the wild chicken eggs I had found after varian decided to leave.
Part of me felt like I should've followed him- but I also knew it was better I didn't.
I mean, I wasn't just going to go after him like a lovesick romantic everytime. Not that I was a fucking romantic.
Hell, I wasn't good with intense emotions or crying- maybe I hadn't helped him right by hugging him. What was I supposed to do in that situation, honestly?
I didn't even know exactly what he was upset about and it wasn't like last night, where he was panicking and I could sympathize and was still shaken from the creepy fucking ghost town. It had been easier then just to hug him and to try to be emotionally sensitive to what he needed.
I had felt intensity in myself.
Fear for him... and- and maybe love???The chicken I had taken along with me was clucking angrily making it hard to think, it's scrawny feet tied to keep it from running away as it protested at its newfound captivity.
I poked it with the stick trying to get it to pipe down, but it only made it cluck louder.
"Oh shut it you."
"Where did you get the chicken Hugo?", Yong suddenly asked, standing beside me as the eggs sizzled down in the pot. "And where's Varian?? Is he doing better?? He's not using the bathroom is he or-?"
The chicken tried to peck my leg as I pushed it away with my foot, Yong watching it curiously.
I sighed, taking the now finished eggs off and pouring them into the bowl for him, "Don't worry about it, now be quiet and eat half-pint."
"Where's Varian?", he persisted, taking the bowl with the now broken sunny-side eggs, "You were supposed to be watching him."
"He fucking went on a walk, I'm not his goddamn babysitter, kid.", I shot at him annoyed, putting the kettle back over the fire to cook some more eggs. "He'll be fine, he's a grown man and if he isn't, you'll fucking know. Now just shut the hell up and eat, please."
Yong looked down hurt, sitting over by the cart with his eggs as the chicken gave me an accusing look, it still clucking obnoxiously.
I then heard Nuru come over, her face livid, "You just let him leave?! And how could you talk like that to Yong? You need to watch your mouth, he's still a kid Hugo!", she scolded. "I can't believe you let Varian just go off by himself especially with his injury and after last night, I expected more sense from you!"
"He wanted to be by himself woman, jeesh. Honestly can't blame him if he figured you'd mother him to death. I'd want to run away too."
"Very funny- this better not be because you didn't watch your big mouth.", she warned, taking the eggs I now was preparing to eat.
I sighed and rolled my eyes, "and what if it was, what are going to do about it exactly?"
She smiled, "I'll kick you in your big boy spot, so you better god damn hope once varian shows up he doesn't say it was cause of you."
