They went in and as soon as the doctors saw Kristen they rushed to get him. The Williams family waited for a few minutes until Jervonte got up.
"I think some that half of us should go to the police station while the other stays here."
Andre nodded his head in agreement, then stood up.
"I'm gonna stay here until we know what the injuries are, then I'll go to the police station," Andre said then walked to the vending machine to get something for him and Janaya.
The other boys had left after saying goodbye to the ones who were staying.
At the police station, Jervonte and Julian head to their friend's office. They talk to him explaining the whole situation starting with finding Janaya.
"Hey, we need to find Kristen James in the system," Jervonte says after they finish explaining the story.
"Anything specific you are looking for?" Officer Jones asked the brothers sitting in front of him. He started to search up the name and scroll through the different results.
"We want to see if he has any family, and if he does we want to check them out before we send him to them," Julian responds.
"Yes, he has grandparents and an aunt and uncle on his dad's side. His dad's side of the family has either died or is too old to take care of him." The officer says turning his screen around to show the brothers Kristen's family.
"Are all of them clean?" Jervonte asks referring to their record and wanting to know if they have a drug problem like Kristen's mom and father did.
"Yes, they're all clean, just some speeding tickets, but who doesn't have those?" Officer Jones replies with a small chuckle at the end.
"Ok, can you contact one of the family members that would be able to take him in?" Jervonte asked his knee now shaking up and down.
"Yea, sure."
Officer Jones started punching numbers on his phone, and once he put in the 10 digits he put the phone on speaker so the boys could hear the call too.
"Hello," a voice came through the phone. It was a man's voice and it didn't sound old, so the boys assumed that they called Kristen's uncle.
"Hey, this is the South Carolina Police Department am I speaking to Treyvon James?" The police officer asked.
"Yes, this is he."
"I am calling about Kristen James."
"Yes, that's my older brother's child."
"Well, his parents died because they were on drugs," Officer Jones said trying to not lie but also not tell the actual truth, "we were wondering if you would like to take him in?"
"I would if I could, but as of right now I am out of town with my family. But I could call my sister to see if she could come down to the police station to get him."
"That should be okay, but as of right now Kristen is in the hospital."
"Why, what happened."
"Well..." Officer Jones ended up retelling the story that the brothers told him.
"If that's the case I will be on an airplane headed to you guys tomorrow since it is late. But since I'm not going to be there until tomorrow, call my younger sister and she should be able to come to get him," Treyvon said now rustling around to get everything together to pack up and go, "Do you need her number?"
"No, I got it in front of me right now."
"and if she doesn't answer the first time that most likely means that she is asleep, so just call her again."
"Will do. Thank you for your time."
"No, thank you. We have been looking for them for the longest time. So, again thank you for finding him and making sure he is safe. Goodbye," he says all of that, then hangs up not letting them get the chance to get another word in.
Then there was a knock on the door, and the person came in without getting an answer-back.
At the hospital, Andre came back with the snacks he bought for him and Janaya.
"Hey, where's my snack?" asked both Jamar and Jahmal at the same time.
"Are you under the age of ten...no? oh ok!" Andre said before getting up to take a walk because he claims that he has gotten really old and can't sit down that long.
It had to be because the kids were annoying him because he had just sat down from getting the snacks. All throughout this conversation though, Janaya hasn't said a word. Which was unusual for her. She was always butting into other people's business. She just sat there with her right leg going up and down and her hand picking at her lip, all because she was getting anxious.
When a doctor comes out of a room with a clipboard he stands at the front like he's about to say something.
"Is this Kristen's family?" The doctor says.
"Yes," they all answered simultaneously.
"Well, unfortunately, Kristen is brain dead."
