Today is the day! It is not only my birthday but... I can't even think about it. I feel like I'm gonna shit my pants. What we are about to do is going to be life-changing.
After a few minutes of overthinking my life choices, there was a knock on my door.
"Come in," I semi-yelled.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY," Janaya yelled running into my room and jumping on me.
"Thank you," I try to say, but it came out more like a grunt. Her knees were pressing into my stomach making me uncomfortable.
"How do you feel being one year closer to death?" She questions.
When I tell you I almost threw her on the floor, but instead of trying to commit first-degree murder, I threw her on the other side of the bed. I started to tickle her making her squeal and laugh really loud.
"You know one day you will be 21 years old too," I told her after her giggles calm down.
"Yea," She then tilted her head up like she is thinking, "You would be older too, making you a real oldie."
"Just get out," I say shaking my head and trying to mask my smile.
She leaves with small laughs coming out of her. I finally get up to get ready for the day. After I complete my hygiene and pick out my outfit, I head downstairs. It's a tradition that whoever's birthday gets to sit at the head of the table. Also, on special occasions, we get to eat pancakes and we get to choose random toppings to put on them. Like usually I always put strawberries, blueberries, and whip cream. Then I would have apples and syrup on the side, together they taste like caramel apples.
When I get downstairs I see some small bowls in the middle of the table. That's usually what we put the toppings in. I can see the chocolate, caramel, and syrup on the tables. We have a table similar to the one on Stuck in the Middle so all we need to do is rotate the table so we can all be able to get the toppings without reaching over people.
(A/N: Picture of table up top👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾)Everyone started to pile downstairs. We all started to pile things on our plates, making small conversations here and there.
Today was a fun day. We did paintball, and then we went to Sparetime and did an escape room and arcade games. We we got home I could tell my brothers were getting nervous, and so was I. My leg was bouncing so much and I couldn't stop it, I tried. I'm just so glad that Janaya is asleep, so she can't really feel all the tension in the car.
When we pulled into the driveway. Jamar shook her gently to wake her up.
"Come on Janaya we are home," Jamar said gently.
She groggily stumbled out of the car and made it to the door to enter the house. When Dad finally got to the door, he unlocked it. She stumbled all the way to the couch.
"Come on," Jahmal said sitting Janaya up from her position on the couch, "we need to talk to you about something."
"mh," she groaned but still complied.
"Well, the boys and I were talking," dad says while walking to her and crouching by the couch.
"About what," she says only slightly looking up because dad on his knees is still a little bit taller than her.
"We wanted to know what you would think about us adopting you?" Dad asks talking in a soft calm voice.
"Um, I-I don't know what to say." She says now looking up at me and the rest of the boys with teary eyes.
"Maybe, yes?" Jahmal asked with a small chuckle.
Janaya started shaking her head, "no," she said in a small whisper.
"Please don't adopt me."
Once she said that tears came out of her eyes, and she ran to her room. I could feel a piece of my heartbreak. I'm pretty sure we all did.
