Today's the day I turn 16. I've been waiting for this day almost the entire year. Birthdays have always been something I look forward to and I can't help but wonder what my friends got me.

It's also a Saturday today and my friends are all on the roof. I head up to them, excited. Although, when I arrive I don't see happy faces or balloons. No, all I can see are empty bottles and cigarettes. I frown.

"Hey guys!" I say as I get closer to the group. "Woah, what's got you so happy today?" Lex asks and it feels as if I've been punched in the gut. "It's my-" I get cut off by Maria. When she's done talking I just smile and start again. "It's my-" I get cut off again.

I can't believe it. None of them remembered my birthday. Not one of them. I know birthday's might not be so important to them, but they are to me. I've remembered every single one of theirs and they can't even remember mine.

The group doesn't even notice me and I can't stand it any longer. I stand up and leave, tears running down my face. They know how important today is for me, but right now it doesn't even feel like they care.

Marcus's POV

I'm just leaving the store. I went to get balloons and a cake for y/n since it's her birthday and I know how much she loves birthdays. I also got her a present, well I actually just made her a mix tape with all her favorite songs and a few new ones for her to try.

I really like y/n, I like-like her. And it means the world to me that she's happy.

Time skip

I'm right outside her door and I light the candles on her cake. I open the door and start singing. Just as I'm about to start the second 'Happy Birthday' I stop. Y/n's sitting by her window, tears staining her cheeks. I put the cake down on her desk and tie the balloons to the chair.

I walk over to her. "Oh hey Marcus," she says, wiping the tears from her face. I frown and wrap my arms around her shoulders. "Hey, what's wrong?" I ask and she shakes her head. "I don't want to talk about it."

I sigh, rubbing small circles on her back. "You can tell me." She nods and sniffs. "Nobody remembered." She starts crying again and I pull her tight. "I did. How could I ever forget you?" She chuckles and looks up.

"I feel so stupid. I'm crying on birthday like a kid." I smile and wipe her tears. "You shouldn't feel stupid. I don't think anyone deserves to have their birthday forgotten."

I stand up, taking her hand, and walk to the table. "Here. There's cake, balloons and a present." She smiles and gives me a tight hug.

I light the candles again because they went out and sing for her. Her entire face lights up and I melt inside.

After a slice of cake, she opens the present and her eyes light up.

"You made me a mix tape?" she asks and I nod. "That's the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me. All of this is. Thank you so much!" She leans forward and kisses my cheek and I blush.

I did it. I made her happy.
