Akira's POV
An Year Later
We were at the playground where the kids' football championship was in full swing. I stood beside Luke as he launched into what he probably thought was an inspiring speech for the girls.
"They are gonna be hitting us with everything they got. So we wanna engage with maximum speed. Neutralize their shooters, and then move on to our objective," he said with all the seriousness of a general planning a covert op.
They're playing a match, not going on a mission.
"There are two things I want you to keep in mind. Number one, I chose you for this squad because you are the most fearsome warriors on the planet."
Sure, Luke, fearsome warriors... more like good players. Also, I was the one who chose them, not you.
"And number two, you go out there, you do your job, and you take 'em down. Everyone. And I mean everyone."
Take them down? Bro, it's football, not a battlefield.
"Manis and pedis at the mall later today," he added with a grin.
"YEAHHHHH!!"
That one got the girls cheering.
Yeah, right. Like you won't get bored halfway and sneak off anyway.
"Okay, girls, that's enough!" I stepped in, earning their attention. "You're not playing this match just for manis and pedis. You're playing to prove to yourselves that you're strong."
"Remember the times you've lost, the times you've been hurt, and all the hard work you've put in to get here. Now go out there and kick their asses!"
"YEAAHHH!" The girls cheered louder and ran off to line up.
Luke turned to me, clearly miffed. "You're not gonna come and cheer?"
"No," I said flatly.
"You sure!?" He asked walking over.
"Yup, 100% positive."
He groaned and turned toward the girls. But before joining them, he spun back to yell, "Really!?"
"YES! Now get on with it!" I waved him off as the girls started... well, something between chanting, yelling, and cheering.
Whatever they're doing, it's loud.
By the end of the match, we were in the lead. Luke was yelling at the top of his lungs when an officer approached us.
"Quite the cheering section," he said, extending his hand. "DS Allen."
"Akira," I replied, shaking it. "I've heard about you from Hobbs. Nobody mentioned you've helped him with missions."
"Yeah... just a handful of them. To Luke, not Nobody, though."
Allen smirked glancing towards the cheering seating. "The cheering section? It's all the moms coming out to support the kids."
"Except there seem to be more moms than kids," he added, clearly amused.
Luke gave him a look.
"Way more moms," Allen said again, smirking.
"Yeah. It's a big soccer town," Luke replied smoothly, flashing a grin at the moms trying way too hard to flirt with him.
Allen quickly switched gears, pulling out a tablet. "So, your intel was spot-on. That Damocles 7 EMP weapon that went missing in the Gulf? Arms dealers from the Liberation Front have it in Berlin."
