My once pristine white bed sheets are now splattered and covered with dark blood. Lumps of what I presumed was once a living rabbit scattered in my bed but what scared me the most is the word that is written in the poor rabbit’s blood.

‘YOU'RE NEXT’

Uncle Louie comes barging in my room followed closely by Uncle Tom, Auntie Cora and Kyla at the sound of my screams.

“Oh my god!” Auntie Cora exclaimed as she immediately pulled me out of my room and towards the sitting room while uproar erupted from my room.

“I'm alright, Auntie.” I whispered as she looks more agitated than I am.

Who could’ve done that?!

What does it means by ‘I'm next’?

Uncle Louie walks inside the room, barking endlessly on his mobile phone. Snapping his phone closed he kneeled in front me.

“Lis, we need to take you under protection. I don’t know who could do that or what their goal is but all I know is that you’re in danger”

“Who could’ve done that Uncle?” I asked, shaken by the event.

Maybe my family never really died in an accident as the reports claimed.

“I don’t know, Lis. At first I thought it might be Stephen but the blood is still fresh and he left the morning before, so I'm not sure if he can do it.” He said seriously as he clenched his fist.

“But we can’t take any chances.”

I nodded; Unbelievably I didn’t feel a bit scared or frightened by the event. Maybe Uncle Louie’s intimidating presence that reassured me or Auntie Cora’s familiar comforting presence.

I heard the siren of police outside the house and sure enough policemen and detectives swarmed our home, fortunately Uncle prevented them from interrogating me.

Hours passed by before they packed up their paraphernalia and left my property.

Auntie Cora brought me to one of the guest rooms to rest for the night and my ever reliable Uncle Louie become my very own guard dog as he position himself in a spare cot near my door with Bersa Thunder-9 pistol across his chest.

“I will stay with my grandmother.” I announced the next morning during a closed-door meeting with Uncle Louie and Atty. Luke.

“No one knows beside us about the existence of my biological grandmother even Uncle Stephen doesn’t know who she is.”

Atty. Luke remain silent, I know he will support me in my decisions while Uncle Louie looks like he is still pondering on my suggestion, the military strategist in him is analyzing every pros and cons of my proposal.

“Okay, it seems to be the next best idea we have here.” He finally said after a minute or two.

“Anyone who instigated this will assume that you are either under my protection or Luke’s. This might mislead them.”

“But.” Uncle looked at me seriously.

“But no one should know about this except the three of us and you must leave this country as well. I'll arrange a private transportation for you so no one will know where and when you left.”

Plans had been set out and decisions are finally analyzed and approved.

No one, not even Auntie Cora and her husband nor Grandma Liliane and Grandpa Henry knew where I will go or when I will be back, all they know is that I need to go somewhere safe.

Sitting beside Grandma with Ana sleeping behind us, I'm looking out of the window of the private jet that Uncle Louie commissioned for our transport.

Goodbyes are always a very hard and painful part of my life especially if I'm the one who is saying goodbyes to people who become a main part of my life.

Auntie Cora cried unstoppably for hours when I told her that I'm leaving, I will miss her and Uncle Tom very much as they are a part of my extended family and been with me since I was adopted.

I already asked Atty. Luke to arrange the deed to our property in Spain and put it on the ownership of Auntie Cora and Uncle Tom along with a yearly stipend to maintain the house and for them to live comfortably.

I still can smell Grandma Liliane’s rose scent as she hugged me tightly as Grandpa Henry bear-hugged us.

They will not know it until I left that the west wing of our mansion belongs to them now with an arrangement that they will take care of our ancestral mansion and Atty. Luke will fund the maintenance of our home.

Staring at the endless blue horizon dotted occasionally with clouds we are on our way to a new place.

Hoping and praying that we are also leaving behind the mortal danger that is threatening my life.
