Grayson
Chapter 38|Her Eyes
I swear I've been here before. This very moment seems all to familiar to me, my elbows leaning against my knees, my leg bouncing as I stare at the door anxiously. Liam beside me, Kelly beside him. The same strong smell of disinfectant, random calls coming from speakers and people rushing through the doors.
I've been here before. I've sat in this seat and watched this movie before, I know how it plays out. I've seen it too many times now, I'm prepared for any jump scares and loop holes. I know that it could be a tragic ending.
I just wasn't ready for it.
I felt like time went so slow in these walls, voices muffled together as one. Nothing seemed real here, it didn't seem real to me that she was in there away from, yet again, fighting for her life. Well, I hope she isn't. Because for her having to fight for her life that means she had the chance of loosing it. I really fucking hope she doesn't.
I wish I could press pause on this movie. I wish I had been able to pull myself together ready for the words. "I'm sorry" then they say they did everything they could. That there sorry for my loss.
As I've said, I've been here before. I've watched the movie. The first time I watched it, it played out differently.
It was really quiet in the house tonight. Which was unusual, my father would have someone killed off by now. Seeing as it's ten o'clock. But as I walked out of my room, looking over the banister I realised that he wasn't here.
I felt relaxed knowing that. But it still didn't explain why it was so quiet. When my father leaves, so does the heavy atmosphere the shadows seem to leave and it seems brighter. I was confused.
I walked towards my mothers room, kicking in the door. "Mumma?" I call out to her softly.
"Grayson! You need to leave!" My mummy was being held against a very tall man. She was crying and I didn't like that.
"Let her go!" I shout, but they didn't. They laughed as another tall man came towards me, pushing me so hard I tripped and fell onto the floor.
"Leave him alone, he's only a child." Mummy shouts. I wasn't a child, I don't how many times I needed to tell her that.
This is what father has been telling me about. He said I need to be a man and protect what matters. Mummy matters. I stand up and square my shoulders out, I've seen father do that. "Let her go, or else." I put on my deepest voice.
"You think you can hurt me kid?" The man laughs. The others join him.
I watch them, learn there moves and pull my teddy closer to me. Mummy didn't know this because father told me not to tell her or he'd take me back down to the dark place. But hidden between the teddy's fur, was a button. I open the button and dig my hand inside.
I feel my fingers touch the cold steel. Father told me it's a gun, if someone crosses me I should kill them.
I'm ashamed to say I've don't that before though. I didn't like it. That's why I'm up, I had another nightmare. The lady called me a monster. "Grayson. Go." I look towards mummy and she's still crying.
I look down at the teddy and then to her. She shakes her head as if she already knows. I always listen to her but father told me if I don't become a man now, then I'm not his son. I don't really know what that means.
