Epilogue (Part 2 of 5)
"Nahanap mo na ID mo?" Trav said when he saw me entering the room.
"Yes." Naupo ako sa tabi niya. Si Raf ay nasa kabilang upuan sa tabi niya. Wala pa ang prof kaya maingay pa sa room.
"Problema mo diyan?" tanong ni Raf.
Napahinga ako ng malalim at pinutol ang kanina pa iniisip. Medyo kinabahan lang naman ako pero imposible naman...
"Do you guys remember that year when I got 'engaged'," I told them.
Parehas tumango ang dalawa. They probably remember that because I kept on sulking and ranting about that stupid engagement. I even badmouthed my fianće kuno because why not?
"Oh bakit? Binubugaw ka ulit?" si Trav.
Umiling ako. Heck! I don't even want to remember that hell year. Akala ko talaga, matatali na ako. Good thing, my supposed wife is wiser than I thought. She escaped to who-knows-where and it's the happiest time of the year for me. Eventually the engagement was called off and I'm free.
"Ano nga ulit pangalan no'n?" ani ko.
"Nino?" si Raf.
"Iyong babae."
They thought for a while before remembering the name.
"Josefina Marie," Raf said.
I almost choked with the mention of her name. I used to bash it before. Ewan ko. Parang makaluma. Ang bantot sa pandinig ko!
But then maybe it's really not.
I'm just bitter and angry with the thought that I was about to be married to someone I don't even know. The decision of the oldies does not make sense.
"Bakit bumalik na?" usisa ni Trav.
Maagap akong umiling.
"Knock on the wood."
Humagalpak sila ng tawa.
"Gago ka." Mahinang sinapak ni Trav ang braso ko.
"Her family has been looking for her for years. Sama ng ugali nito." Raf said.
They shut their mouth when the prof arrived. Hindi ko na rin inisip pa ang tungkol do'n. Besides, it's a common name. Maraming may ganoong combination ng pangalan. Kaya hindi ko na inisip iyon sa mga sumunod na beses pa naming pagkikita ni Jeorge. I want to even bury the memory of that woman whom I am betrothed to.
"Parang tanga 'to."
I glared at Dos who's at the urge to laugh. Hindi rin niya napigilan at tumawa rin.
"Ulol ka." I shot back and threw sharp stares at him. Kaming dalawa ang naiwan dito sa lamesa sa cafeteria dahil um-order iyong tatlo.
"Kasalanan ko ba? It's not as if I put some spell on Jeorge so she would have a crush on me." He said trying to be serious but the teasing couldn't escape my ears.
"Enjoy ka naman 'no? Didn't you already have the 'love of your life'?" ani ko. Nababanas na ako sa itsura nito. Hindi rin ako mapaniwala na nagka-crush na agad si Jeorge sa kanya kahit na wala pang isang oras silang magkakilala!
"Oo nga. Sinabi ko bang liligawan ko si Jeorge?"
"Oh, so now you have plans?"
He teasingly smirked and rested his back on the monoblock chair. Pasalamat ito at hindi ko siya katabi at masapak ko pa. Kakabanas iyong mukha e!
"Bakit ikaw meron?"
I was taken aback from what he said. I froze for a second before blinking my eyes repeatedly.
