Chapter 6: Humdinger's Assembly

Ryder and the pups waited patiently at Brendam Docks for Emily to arrive with her coaches. As they waited, they surveyed the port area to see what the docks had to offer. They scrutinized as the red dockyard diesel and the viridian steam engine shunted goods trains waiting to be taken to their destination. There were open wagons that were filled with crates, flatbeds of spare engine parts, and fuel tankers full of diesel. There was a tall crane that went by the name of 'Cranky' that was unloading wooden crates and wooden boxes from the ships that were sitting idle until they were done being unloaded. Two other cranes were at the docks helping the tall crane with other shipments. One was a bright yellow gantry crane while the other one was a grey hammerhead crane. Ryder and the pups watched as the engines puffed into the docks and reversed into their given trains. The engines didn't look pleased and muttered to themselves as they entered the docks, as something had been agitating them. Once they were coupled up, they fumed out of the docks without a trace. Ryder and the pups noticed this and started to get dubious about the engine's complexions and wondered if Humdinger was involved. The pups exchanged looks and nodded in assumption. Just then, two identical saddle tank engine twins with golden yellow liveries with red lining and had the initials "SSC" painted in yellow on their sides pulled into the docks with cars loaded with China clay. They too were not happy and started to have a quiet conversation. Ryder and the pups listened in on their conversation.

"That new controller seems to be a bit bossy, eh, Bill?" Ben asked his twin.

"You're telling me, Ben. He's more bossier than Marion. It's like he doesn't know how to be a railway controller." Bill replied

"I heard he's gathering all of us at the shunting yards at Knapford to show us his new invention. I wonder what it is."

"Maybe it's a catapult to launch himself far away from the island. I'd really like to see that." Joked Bill as the two saddle tank engines came to a stop.

"What was his name again? Mayor Humdinger? He doesn't sound like a railway controller to me at all. It sounds like your average grumpy old neighbor who complains about everything." Bill said.

This made Ben chuckle. "Good one, Bill! I bet he complains more than the average person! He looks like someone who goes into another town just to go shopping for his clothes instead of the town he's in!" Ben giggled. And just like that, the two saddle tank engine twins were uncoupled from their cars and set off back to the China clay pits.

Chase, who had heard everything loud and clear, turned back to the rest of the pups.

"You hear that? Sounds like Humdinger is having an assembly at Knapford." Chase told the others.

"We better get there, quick. We need to find out what his new invention is." Ryder said, looking around the dockyard for Emily. Just then, they all heard a whistle coming from their left and saw Emily pulling her emerald coaches that Sir Topham Hatt gave her for saving the day before a nasty accident took place between Oliver and Thomas. Ryder and the pups waved at her and ran towards her as she came to a stop and greeted the team for the second time that day.

"I've brought my coaches! All aboard to Knapford station!" She called enthusiastically before Ryder and the pups boarded the coaches and took a seat.

Emily tooted her whistle as she departed from the docks and made her way towards the big station. The pups were excited to ride in an actual train on a railway.

"Dude, this is so cool!" Zuma exclaimed.

"I've never rode on a train before." Rubble said.

"This is more fun than riding in the PAW Patroller!" Marshall said.

The pups glared at him for his last sentence. "What?"

Chase, who was now serious about the idea of Humdinger unveiling his big invention, cleared his throat to catch their attention.
