Chapter Eighty Three

PEETA'S POV

I hold Katniss's hand as we stand in the justice building with Willow in between us. I see the boy that hurt her and feel my anger boiling over. "What do you plea Samuel?" The judge asks. "Not guilty." Murmurs go through the court room and he smashes his gavel against the desk.

"Order, order... Please call the jury in." The jury walks in and I look over my shoulder to see Emily sitting behind us with Haymitch, already given the evidence to the PeaceKeepers. Our prosecutor stands and clears his throat. "Samuel knew, he knew that he did something awful. He knows now that he cannot hide from it. He took the virginity of young Willow Mellark the most vile and brutal way, he raped her." I squeeze Willow's shaking hand.

"Now, Willow will forever have the fear of loving anyone, or letting anyone of the opposite sex touch her. He has done something that cannot be fixed, her trauma will stay with her forever, there is a long lasting affect and he doesn't notice that... Or does he? If you don't find Samuel guilty you must be insane." "What's your proof?" Samuels lawyer asks. "We have a test right after the rape showing its his DNA that was on Willow, there are pictures of the bruises he inflicted, I can show you to them if you want your honor."

"Please." He says. He hands him the evidence and the judge chuckles, looking up at him. "Son, I hope to god you know there is an extremely good chance of you ending up in jail today where men will beat you to a pulp for doing what you did." Samuel doesn't say anything. The trail goes on for a few more hours and the the jury stands. "We have a verdict your honor." He nods. "We find the defendant guilty of all charges." He points to Samuel. "I sentence you to 25 years in prison, maybe by then you will figure out how to treat a woman." I glare at him as he is dragged away, his father talking to him quickly.

I take Katniss by the hip and then look at Willow. "You okay sweetie?" She looks pale, like she's about to faint. She shakes her head. "I-I need to get out of here." She rips herself away from my grip and bolts out the justice building. I go to chase after her but Katniss shakes her head. "Give her time... This will be hard on her for the rest of her life, just be patient."

Later that night I sleep soundly with Katniss in my arms and then I hear Willow scream from a nightmare. I go to check up on her but she's already on the phone with that army man. How he talks to her, how he treats her; it instantly relaxes her and that gives me all the peace in the world. She grips her blanket but I can see her small smile as he jokes with her. I smile a little as well, noticing my little girl isn't really a little girl anymore.

I shut her door gently and I feel Katniss's arms wrap around my waist, kissing my neck. "She's fine, come on let's go get some sleep." I turn and look down at her. "I'm not really tired." She takes my hand. "Thinking about things to much?" I nod. "Let's take a walk." We walk down the stairs hand in hand, and walk out the door. Her boots move through the dirt while mine do as well. Her hand fits perfectly in mine, making my smile a little. "You know, it almost looks normal here again." I look around and smile. "It does doesn't it?" I kiss the top of her head. "You're worried about her."

She says bluntly. I nod. "Yeah I am... You know she'll be out of the house soon, and I'm scared. I'm scared she'll end up like us." Katniss gives me a sad smile. "She won't, and Peeta I think we have a pretty good life." She stops me and presses her forehead against mine. "And I couldn't ask for a better man to spend it with." I kiss her, God she knows how to relax me, stop my worries, put me in complete bliss. She kisses my nose, running her hands up my cheekbones that has stubble on them from me not shaving.

"I love you so much." Tears roll down my cheeks and she brushes them away. "What's wrong." "Please don't leave me." "What?" "Just promise me Katniss, promise me you'll stay with me."
