Chapter Forty Eight

PEETA'S POV

I look up as I sink down deeper into the murky abyss that will be my death. I see explosion after explosion above the water, more and more bodies being thrown down with us. I look over at Haymitch who isn't moving, bubbles coming from his mouth.

I turn my head again and see Johanna, fighting the restrains and screaming angrily but no sounds come from her. Bodies pass us like torpedoes, all of them Soldiers from District Thirteen. As I look up, my life flashing before my eyes, memories pass through me.

My beautiful wife Katniss, her smile lighting up any dark moment, who unconditionally loved our daughter, who cared so much, and got so little... I hope she knows how much I loved her. Then as the piece of cement hits the bottom of the lake, tying my fate to death, I look up and my heart wants to stop then. I see Katniss, sinking down to the bottom, blood exploding from a gunshot wound like red sheets dancing in the wind.

I reach and grab her limp body, bringing her close to my chest. Her head rests on my shoulder, her braid has come undone, her MockingJay pin sparkles against the lights from above. I place a soft kiss on her lips, feeling my lungs about to give out... And then they do. Everything is silent, blank, no movement, just water, no life, no air, just water, water... Then all of the sudden the water turns to trackerjackers and Katniss's eyes open and she grabs my cheekbones and yells as clear as day. "Peeta!"

Then she reverts to when she was seventeen. "Peeta!" Then to fourteen. "Peeta!" Then to ten. "Peeta!" Then to six, a little girl, her hands so tiny and her grey eyes filled with fear, wearing her plaid dress. "Peeta!" Then she completely dissipates from my arms and the trackerjackers surround me.

"It's the things we love the most, that destroy us." President Snows voice echoes above the buzzing of the mutts. Then I hear Katniss's agonized cries. "Help me Peeta!" Then I start free falling through the trackerjackers and then I hit the bottom of this place with a hard crunch.

I sit up with covers falling off of me and screaming. "Katniss!" I look over to the side of the bed and see she isn't there. It's very dark outside, it's even more dark in the house with the moon giving me very little vision.

I fall out of bed and rush down the stairs to our house and out the front door. "Katniss!" I scream out through District Twelve. I run as fast as I can down the victors village screaming and sobbing, my feet getting punctured by gravel until I run right into somebody with a loud oomf!

"Jesus Christ Peeta Mellark I'm going to have to lock you in the god damn house!" I hear Katniss yell. I look down and see her beautiful grey eyes glaring at me, grey, the color I've wanted to see for so long.

I grin, tears rolling down my cheeks and kiss her hard on the lips, with a sigh of relief. I rest my forehead against hers as I start sobbing and I put my hands to her beautiful cheeks. "You were hijacked Katniss, Hugo killed you, your heart stopped, I was holding your dead body when I was at the bottom of the lake." I stutter to her and she shushes me quietly.

"Who the hell is Hugo? I wasn't hijacked Peeta." "Capitol Rebels burned down District Twelve and shot me, you were trying to protect me and you took the beatings and the hijacking... You got pregnant with a peacekeepers baby and you thought I was a monster... Katniss you scared me to death." I sob louder.

She rests my head in the crook of her neck where I smell the worn leather of her jacket and I sob louder, her shushing not doing anything. "I'm right here, nothing happened to me, you're okay, everything's okay Peeta, I'm not going anywhere." "Why weren't you in bed? It looks like its late." I mutter and she runs her fingers through my blonde disheveled locks that are damp with sweat.

"I went to get you some more bandaging, you did get shot Peeta but by vandals... You've must been hallucinating sense Monday." I then feel the pain in my stomach and whimper. "What day is it today?" I ask softly. "It's Sunday Peeta." I was in this torturous nightmare for six days... It felt like months, that's how it went in the dream.

Katniss kisses my jaw gently. "Come on, we need to get you back inside before you start bleeding to heavy and also before someone sees you in your underware." She says softly. I prop myself up on my knees and now notice the chill of the spring night. Katniss gets up and wraps her arm around my waist, helping me stand and walking me back to the house as I still sob.

When she finally lays me down she turns on the lamp by our bed and I squint my eyes. Her hair is in its normal braid, she has now taken off her jacket to show a white tabletop that shows the scars licking her arms and some of her neck. She grabs some scissors and cuts off the old bandaging from my stomach and then looks at the wound. It's healing, but it's still bleeding.

Katniss grabs a damp cloth and dabs it gently, her grey eyes focused on every movement she makes. I'm still crying a little bit but it's dying down now, it looks like it's bothering Katniss though, I can see the guilt and pain in her eyes. "Does it hurt?" Katniss asks softly and I shake my head.

"Not really, I'm okay." She nods slowly and then grabs the new wrap and straddles my hips. She starts wrapping my stomach and I watch her as her grey eyes track her steady hands. I sniffle and clear my throat. "I love your eyes Katniss... Never let them change colors." Katniss looks up into my eyes and chuckles. "They won't Peeta, don't worry."

Then she finishes bandaging me and she rests her warm hands on my chest. "I'm sorry I didn't know you were having such bad nightmares Peeta... If I knew I would've woken you up." "I know Katniss, it's okay." Her grey eyes look sad and she leans down and kisses me slowly. I grab her hips gently, her kiss gentle but slow and sweet.

I like these kinds of kisses from Katniss, they make me feel warm all over. She takes time making sure that I feel every little kiss which makes me smile a little bit. When she breaks away, leaving a small peck once again on my lips she smiles.

"Are you hungry? Do you need some water? Whatever you want Peeta I'll make sure you get it." My voice is raspy, my mind is exhausted, my body feeling like jello. "I just want to hold you Katniss, I want to hold you to make sure this is real... I don't want to go back to that world." She looks down at me and nods.

"Okay." She turns off the light in our room, laying down and resting her head on my chest, proceeding to pull up the blankets, making sure I get the most of them. I undo her hair from its braid and let my fingers take their time, letting them run through her soft and beautiful glossy dark locks.

After I'm finished with her braid I bring her closer to me, where I hear her heartbeat, strong and steady, where I hear her breathing, soft and slow. Her arms wrap around my neck that is still slick with sweat and then helps me lock my arms around her waist so we are completely pressed together.

"You love me, real or not real?" I whisper and she rests her forehead against mine, her grey eyes calming me and bringing love to my soul.

"Real." She kisses my lips once more and then rests her head on my shoulder. After that she falls into a deep sleep but I don't, I'm to afraid to, I don't want to go back to that place, so I stay up, holding my wife and praying that morning light will come soon.
