Chapter Forty Four

KATNISS'S POV

I stand out on the balcony of my home in District One with my fiancé Hugo Corex. He's training young PeaceKeepers for fighting in the rebellion, to bring balance back to Panem. I look down and see him walking up the steps to our home.

He looks up at me with his green eyes twinkling. He grins and waves, walking through the door. I give myself a smile. He's perfect, loving, compassionate, strong, stubborn at times but perfect to me. "Katniss I'm home!" He yells from downstairs with a Capitol accent.

I walk down the stairs in a pair of slacks and a blue tank top. When I see him in the kitchen setting down his helmet he turns and smiles.

He walks over to me and wraps his arms around me, his lips pressing against mine with his scruff scraping my cheeks. He breaks away, resting his forehead against mine. "How was your day darling?" I kiss his lips once more chuckling. "It was fine, I went and taught a few of the town children how to shoot a bow in the nature park."

He takes my bad arm that still throbs from an apparent mining accident while I was in Twelve, alone and almost dying of starvation of food and human contact. "I hope you didn't hurt yourself." I shake my head smiling.

"Of course I didn't, I just helped them a little bit with pulling back the arrow." He sighs and kisses my nose. "That's the thing I wanted to hear because you and I have a party to go to tonight with the old Capitols finest."

"Do we have to go Hugo? You know I really don't like parties that much." He looks into my eyes. "Are you feeling ill? If you aren't feeling well Katniss you must tell me." "I'm just achy that's all, the norm." "Are you sure? We don't have to go if you don't want to." I kiss his jaw. "No, I suppose it's fine I guess I'll be getting ready." I go to walk away but he grabs my hand.

"Before you do, mind having a shot of brandy with me?" I raise a eyebrow as his grin broadens. "I don't think that'll hurt." He laughs, wrapping his arm around my waist and leading me to the soft white couch. I sit down and so does he. He presses a button on the wall. "Can you please bring down two shots of brandy for me and the Mrs?" "Right away sir."

A soft voice says. He smiles and after about a minute or two a blonde man walks in, his head held high while in a tux and holding our brandy. He hands Hugo's first and then looks at me. His blue eyes have deep purple bags under them from lack of sleep, his hair is neatly slicked back and I see his hands start to shake, spilling my brandy all over me. He gasps.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to!" He quickly says as he grabs a towel and gently pats away the wetness from my shirt. I take his arm and he stops and I give him a small smile. "It's alright, accidents happen." Hugo grabs my arm.

"Don't touch the servant Katniss, get her another one quickly! Spilling shit on my fiancée won't help your pay Mellark!" He bows quickly, brushing the tears from his cheeks. "I'm sorry sir, please forgive me." He rushes upstairs. I look at Hugo. "Hugo James Corex." He takes a sip of his brandy.

"What?" He says innocently. "Don't be so hard on him, he was on the verge of tears the poor man!" "He needs to be a man, grow a spine like a PeaceKeeper." He says gruffly. "Not all men are like PeaceKeepers Hugo." He bites his lip. The blonde man comes down once again, sniffling and hands me my brandy. "My apologizes."

I smile, patting his chest. "It's fine, please go and relax in your quarters we don't need you anymore tonight." He nods and walks back upstairs. I take a sip of my brandy and Hugo huffs. I feel like I remember that name, that man from somewhere so I turn to Hugo. "I feel like I know him." He scoffs. "No you don't Katniss, you must be thinking nonsense."
