Chapter Thirty Nine

GALES POV

I look up and panic, Peeta has the noose around his neck, his blue eyes filled with tears as Katniss begs with him to come down. "Peeta come down please! Let me help you! It's okay Peeta you won't hurt me again." "That's right!" He screams, gripping the noose.

"That's right I won't ever lay a hand on you because I won't be here! This is for your safety!" "God dammit Peeta come down!" She screams while crying. He shakes his head, his bottom lip trembling. "No." I slowly creep away from Katniss and start climbing up the thick stump.

Katniss sees what I'm doing and quickly starts stalling him. "Peeta what about Willow? Willow our daughter? You can't leave her and I here." "Katniss I can't hurt you two again." "Peeta I can help you with your attacks just come down and we'll work on it, together, you and I." "Stop harassing me!" He spats angrily at Katniss. I grab a branch and pull myself up and stand on it.

"I'm sick! I'm a monster! I can't hurt you two again I just can't Katniss! You love Gale not me!" "I do love Gale Peeta but not in the way you think!" "You're lying to me!" I stand on the branch Peeta is on and Katniss covers her mouth. "Please Peeta." She says and he shakes his head. Then he jumps. "Peeta no!" I scream, grabbing my knife in a swift motion and before the rope snaps straight I cut the rope and Peeta plummets to the ground, hitting it hard out cold.

Katniss rushes over to him, putting her head to his chest and nods slowly. "We need to get him to the Capitol."

I look through the one way window of Katniss holding onto Peeta's hand while he's still out cold, a neck brace around his neck. Katniss gently puts her lips to his knuckles and stands as nurses go to check his brain activity.

A nurse puts a bandage on my cheek from where a branch scratched me and Katniss walks through the door, her hair falls in messy dark curls with her grey eyes filled with the look of lack of sleep. "How is he?" I ask quietly and she crosses her arms over her chest.

"Alive." I nod and she looks away from Peeta and looks at me. "I don't know how to thank you." "Don't mention it Catnip, it was the least I could do." Abruptly her arms wrap around me and my arms wrap around her waist. Then her hands go to my scruffy cheeks and her lips go to mine. Her lips slowly move in synch with mine and after a few moments she breaks away with tears in her eyes.

"Take that as a goodbye kiss." She whispers, her lips ghosting mine, leaving shivers stinging down my spine. Tears start stinging in my eyes and they slowly roll down my cheeks. She brushes them away with her thumbs and shushes me. "Don't cry Gale, please." "We should've gone when you said." I stutter and she looks confused.

"What?" "When you said we should've ran away just you and me before the Quell if we left we wouldn't be in this situation, I'm sorry I didn't listen." "Gale don't think about that." "How can't I? I lost you, the love of my life because of my jealousy." She looks down and I bite my lip.

"I've lost that jealousy because I know that you love him and he loves you I could never take you from him... I will never forget that moment when I messed up." I clear my throat as the tears get thicker. "Guess that the song is true isn't it?"

She looks up at me with her beautiful grey eyes and she frowns. "I'm sorry." She plants another soft and gentle kiss on my lips as we hear Peeta moaning from inside his hospital room and she gasps with tears forming in her eyes. "Peeta!" She rushes into the room and quickly wraps her arms around him sobbing hysterically. "Bye Catnip, I love you too."

I whisper and then set my palm on the cool glass as I watch her kiss him, much more differently than she just did with me laughing, and grinning like a idiot and I just chuckle softly.

"I'll be waiting for you to hang in the tree with me." I shake my head and slide down the wall and cover my face. "We should've gone when you said."
