Chapter Twenty Nine

I look out the window of the living room and see Katniss sitting out on a rocking chair out on the porch in the nipping cold. I've tried everything to bring her back in but she refuses every time.

Haymitch comes out of his house and sits on the porch with her for a few hours, it seems Haymitch is the only one getting through to her. Effie has come and wants to assist us, Rye is over everyday helping with Katniss. We don't know if the baby's okay, we don't even know if it's dead.

She's angry with herself and she doesn't really talk to me or even touch her. Haymitch is outside with her, talking quietly. He takes off his jacket and slings it around Katniss's shoulders, then wraps a arm around her, kissing the top of her dark curls. I look at Effie who is dusting off old pictures of our families. "Effie you can sit down, cleaning isn't a problem right now." She sighs, dropping her feather duster.

"I know, when I get anxious or nervous I have a tendency to clean." She says, tapping her long nails against the mahogany table by the couch. "I just don't understand." "What?" She asks. "How she won't even let me touch her and the one person that she gets into the most arguments with is the only one who can get through her thick skull." I mumble. Effie sits on the couch awkwardly with her snowball dress on.

"I want her to know that I'm always going to be here for her and I want to know if she's okay." Effie pats my hand. "Peeta, I'm sure Katniss knows that you will be there for her and you'll love her... But I think Katniss is just really scared right now I mean, being pregnant is scary for anyone and it's stressful... Just give her time." Rye walks in after working at the bakery for a few hours. "How is she?" He asks, flour all over him. I point to the window where she is still outside, talking to Haymitch as it starts to snow.

"You've got to be kidding me." He huffs. I see Haymitch stand up and then walks inside, his nose red from the cold. "How is she?" I ask and he shrugs. "Alright I guess, pissed off but alright." "Is she in pain? If she is I can take her medicine out to her-" "Peeta, I just think we should leave her alone for a little bit longer... She's fine for right now." I nod slightly and then hear the back door open and a set of boots walking in.

We all turn and see a snow covered Johanna with a bag slung over her shoulder. "I heard what happened. Where is she? Where are those bastards?" She says in a raspy voice. "She's out front and I took care of them all." I say quietly and she growls. "Well you should've at least saved one for me." Rye looks over at her. "And you are?" She glares. "Johanna Mason you misshaped form of Peeta." I hold back my laughter.

"You look a little weird yourself there Johanna." "Shove a foot up your ass." His mouth drops and she looks at me. "So can I go talk to her or what?" She says and I look over at Haymitch. "In my opinion I think Peeta should go out there first." I nod slightly. "Okay." I walk to the door and open it a tad and see her sitting there, with Haymitch's jacket still wrapped around her. I walk over to her and sit in the rocking chair next to her. She doesn't look at me. Her nose is a deep red from the cold, her cheeks flushed, her grey eyes watery.

I take one of her cool hands into my warm ones and clear my throat. "You should come inside, you're so cold honey." She swallows. "I deserve it." She whispers. "Why would you say that?" "Because I hurt the baby." She whispers and tears roll down her cheeks, gripping my hand a little harder. "What's wrong?" I ask and she shakes her head. "It's been moving in weird places and it's really starting to hurt." Well at least now I know it's not dead. She knows what I'm thinking. "Don't get your hopes up, dead bodies have involuntary movements... You should know that." She mumbles, brushing her tears away.

"Katniss you aren't helping the situation here by sitting out in the cold, it's bad for someone who's pregnant." She looks into my eyes. "I might not be pregnant anymore." I lift her shirt gently where I see the deep purple and blood red bruises. I lay my hand ever so gently on her distended belly and she winces. "You're still pregnant, until you loose this belly I won't think otherwise." Katniss moves my hand away from her stomach. "It hurts when you touch it." I set my hand on my lap. "Could you please just come inside, that's all I'm asking." She's biting her lip but she huffs. "Fine." She mutters.
