"Did we get them all?" Bruce asked hesitantly
"You telling me this'll actually work?" Rhodey asked in disbelief
There's a pause as everyone starts to realise someone is missing.
"Clint, Nat where's Y/n?" Bruce asked making everyone look at the two.
Clint falls to his knees as Nat looked pained for a brief moment when he said her name, but she wiped it off and became stoic like.
"Nat? What happened?" Steve tentatively asked her and he holds her shoulders to keep her steady but she looks up at him with pain in her eyes.
The silence from Clint and Nat tells them all they need to know.
The mission was completed but at a dire cost. Sadness overtakes everyone. Bruce falls to his knees and pounds the floor in grief. Y/n was his friend. She was all of theirs.
The original Avengers are outside HQ. Lakeside, Tony, Steve, Thor, Clint, Nat and Bruce are mourning their fallen teammate and friend.
"Do we know if she had family?" Tony asked as he looked down at his hands. Acceptance and regrets fills him, he didn't know her for long. He wished he never pushed her away.
"Yeah. Us." Steve look up at him. Steve was beside Nat who was sitting looking at the water.
"What?" Thor asked confused
"I just asked him a question-" Tony starts to explain as Thor started to walk up to them.
"Yeah, you're acting like she's dead. Why are we acting like she's dead? We have the stones, right? As long as we have the stones, Cap, we can bring her back, isn't that right?"
"So stop this shit. We're the Avengers, get it together." Thor growls out. He was in denial and believed that with the stones they could get her back. She had became his friend as they talked more about his family when she would take him food and eat with him.
"We can't get her back." Clint mumbles
"Wha– what?" Thor turns around to look at him.
"It can't be undone. It can't." Clint tells him a little louder this time.
Thor dryly laughs.
"I'm sorry. No offense, but you're a very earthly being. Okay? We're talking about space magic. And "can't" seems very definitive don't you think?" Thor angrily points out.
"Yeah, look, I know that I'm way outside my paygrade here. But she still isn't here, is she?" Clint looks to Thor.
"No, that's my point–"
"It can't– be undone. Or that's at least what the red floating guy had to say." Clint starts to shouts. "Maybe you wanna go talk to him, okay? GO GRAB YOUR HAMMER, AND YOU GO FLY AND TALK TO HIM!" Clint yells at him.
Clint's anger is quickly replaced with grief.
"It was supposed to be me. She sacrificed her life for that goddamn stone. She bet her life on it." Nat finally spoke up, which made everyone look to her.
Nat just wanted her sister to be with her right now. She would never see Bucky again or Wanda. Y/n will never see Steve and her get married. Y/n never had the chance to start her own family, thats all Nat wanted for her. Even if Nat died herself, it would still be better.
In a burst of anger, Bruce grabs a bench and hurls it clear across the lake. His anger spent, he turns to the others with a resigned look on his face.
"She's not coming back. We have to make it worth it. We have to." Bruce tells them as they in turn looked at him.
" We will." Steve mumbles and turns around as he silently cry's for another friend he's lost.
Natasha found him in their room to see him holding a picture frame of him and Bucky that Y/n had took before everything went to shit. Steve was silently crying making Nat climb on the bed and hold him from the back as the both of them have silent tears fall down from their faces.
"What am I going to tell him? If we can't get her back... Im going have to tell him that his wife SACRIFICE HERSELF FOR A STONE!" Steve threw the picture against the wall making the glass shattered.
Nat hugged him harder as he moved her to sit in his lap. They both hugged each other for dear life.
"Am I a bad person to be glad it wasn't you..?" Steve cried into her neck. This made her close her eyes tightly and take a breath in before making him look at her.
"No... no it doesn't. You are an honorable, kind, big hearted man. I would feel the same about you if our rolls were switched. Y/n cared to much... which is a blessing and a curse. She did this to help bring our family's back. You've done the same before. And I know you will keep doing it over and over again. You are not a bad man Steve." She puts her hand over his heart.
"You have the heart of a leader and A soul of a warrior. You are strong. We will get her back, I know it." She tells him as he nods then pulls her back into a hug.
Meanwhile Tony was sitting in one of the labs by himself as he looked down at Y/n phone that was in his hands. He had it open to her contact list and his thumb hovered over the name Carlos.
He wanted to tell them what had happened. Tony had already started to accept it, not because he didn't care. It was because he knew there would be some kind of consequences if they did all this. Before he was about to push the call button some came in. When he looked up he saw Bruce.
"Hi" Tony awkwardly waved at Bruce, who just sat down one of the couches there.
"Why would you think she did it?" Bruce asked him. Tony didn't know the answer so he just let Bruce ramble on.
"I mean she had a life already being made with Carlos and Lemar. She could have just never had helped us and she would still be here or at least with them." Bruce looks down at his hands.
"Then she finds out there's a chance she could bring back her husband. But She still decides to sacrifice her self for others. She sacrifice herself... for some of us that she didn't know very well...." Bruce trails off as he sees a far away look in Tonys eyes.
"Because she loved....She loved everyone she meet. She loved the ones closest to her the most. When you feel that kind of love, you'll do anything to keep it alive. And she did." Tony tells Bruce as he kept staring far away ahead.
"She dose..." Tony mumbles as he corrects himself.
