You whistle, watching Mao run back to you from the fields. Her wounds had healed by now and she's been trained to come back when you whistle, though mostly she runs free. She never had decided to run home, though, staying where she was. Maybe she thought of it as home, too.
"Come on, let's get inside! Mao. It's getting dark, we don't want you staying out alone anymore" you say strictly, tapping your wand against yourself with crossed arms. Mao growls but stomps back in, only getting happy again when you put up her mobile with different toys and snacks hanging on it. It was the only thing that would keep her busy whilst she had to stay indoors for her safety. You step down from the ladder and check on the Griffin's and the bowtruckle's in the tree, letting them climb along your arm, and leave a little chain of pearls for the fairy's. "It's yours now, I don't wear it" you say, hearing the chain taken away with happy chatter as soon as you turned your back. You reinforce the protective barrier around your house and go back inside, putting up your sleeves.
"Hello darling, are you hungry? I've made pumpkin soup with some fresh bread" your mom says, taking out the bread from the oven. "Yes mom, thank you so much" you answer and sit down on a barstool at the counter, brushing back your hair.
"Is dad coming home early?"
"I suspect he'll overdo it again, you know how he is."
"Even with all the things happening now that who-must-not-be-named is back?"
That is exactly when your dad bursted in, dropping his bag and coat immediately.
"The Ministry, it's been overthrown" he gasps, hanging up his coat slowly.
"What do you mean? Overthrown?" your mom asks.
"It's full of Death Eaters. They're going to change everything."
"What will you do? Will you stay home with us?" you ask, trying not to sound demanding.
"No darling... I'll continue. Looking at their ideologies, I'll be safe. Both parents are wizards, I'll be alright. I'm safe, okay?"
"You promise?"
"I do. Now, tell me about your progress!"
With that your father sat down on the stool next to you, making you tell him about how you've trained Mao and practiced your Apparation and nonverbal spells.

The next morning you received an owl from Blaise, knocking on your window. You quickly take the letter and give it a treat, then open it up

Dear Y/N,
I hope everything is well!
I'm writing you because I was wondering wether you would return to Hogwarts with me this semester, especially with the circumstances and your fathers job. My mom is forcing me to go anyway, she says it's safest there. How about you?
And also, I'd like to know how Mao is doing. Last time you told me she was healing well, so is she healthy now? Still as active as before or even more now? Let me know!
Yours,
Blaise Zabini

You smile at the letter and quickly store it in a dresser, full of pictures and letters of your friends you collected over the years. Getting out a pen and paper you write your response:

Dear Blaise,
My parents have decided to keep me at home, at least up until after Christmas. You-know-who is very active right now, so they're worried he will mess with the unprotected travel to find Potter. They'll teach me instead they said, so I'm currently learning more about Apparition and non verbal spells, they're quite easy actually. Though I don't enjoy the feeling of Apparition, it makes me nauseous.
For Mao, she's doing well! In the time she fully healed and we let her run free when it isn't dark out, but somehow she's still awake and energetic as someone possibly can be when I try to calm her and have her stay inside, so I built a mobile to keep her busy.
Hope you won't miss me too much at Hogwarts,
Y/N Y/L/N

With skilled fingers you fold the paper and put it in an envelope, securing the paper with a small wax seal in your favorite color. Addressing it to Blaise you sent it off, watching the owl fly away into the cloudy skies.
You throw on an old pair of jeans, a thin sweater and a comfy jacket on top, then you jog downstairs to grab something to drink. It was a Sunday after all, today you wouldn't have to learn anything. There you also found your mom and dad talking and laughing, wishing you a good morning.
You tiredly return it, when suddenly the whole house starts shaking.
"Get to the animals and check, I'll go for the door" your dad says and your mom gets up worried, grabbing you by your arm and sending you outside.
"Wait, who is it?" you ask and go a few steps back to see who was walking in, when you smell a familiar stench.
