As our day wound down and the great wonders of Italy dwindled, and the distance between us and the island shortened, it was soon hard to contain my excitement. The whole day had went by perfectly and I was so very ready for the night ahead of us. Our last stop was a place called the Trevi Fountain. Legend had it that if you threw a coin in the fountain that you would return to Rome one day. It was a long car ride from Venice to Rome, but it worked out. We returned the car and for the day, we had been hoofing it. We were close to the harbor where I had a speed boat waiting for us. When we finally reached the fountain Ellie was deeply amazed and astounded. She looked at the beautiful architecture, the marble columns and the clear, blue water. On top of the fountain beautiful figured carved and standing in elegant poses.
"Ok, so I have a question." She asked with a smile
"And what question is that?"
"Since all of the places you've shown me means something important to Italy, what does this symbolize?"
I wordlessly passed her a coin and confused she took it.
"What's this for?"
"Throw it in." I simply said
She did and watched and heard it *plop* through the surface and then float down to settle on the bottom. She turned back to me.
"Legend has it that if you throw a coin in this fountain, then you'll return one day. And the best part is, all of this money is donated to charity for the needy."
"Well then that is great. This is a great almost last day in Italy. Where else are we visiting?"
"If you will follow me Pet, you will see where." I smiled
Curious, she followed behind me as I began to walk. Since we had been walking a lot, I couldn't wait to actually get to the boat. Not too long later, we reached the boat. I had everything planned, all of our things were already at the island, unpacked and ready to go.
"A boat? Where are we going?" Ellie asked happily
I stepped into the boat, one foot in the boat, and one still on the pier.
"You trust me?" I asked her
"Of course I do."
"Then climb into the boat with me. You'll know when we get there."
I outstretched my hand and she took it with no hesitation. A shiver of pleasure and happiness flowed through me, I loved that she trusted me. I made sure to never disrupt that. I helped her into the boat and started untethering us from the pier.
"This surprise just gets better and better."
