"Well, that's the last box." I remarked to Caine an hour later.
I heard him click his teeth.
"Yeah. You sure you're going to be able to hold down the fort, show Leo the way we do things here?" He asked me
I laughed a bit.
"Isn't he supposed to be the one in charge?"
"Well of course, but he doesn't know how we do things here, he has the knowledge but not the know-how."
"That is true. So...where is his office going to be?"
Caine gave me an "are you serious" look and I sighed in total exasperation.
"Nooooo!" I wined
"Well there are no other choices Ellie, we're the only office on this floor, and space is limited, so we have to make due with the space we have. Why do you think we share this office now?"
"I don't know, I thought maybe you enjoyed my company." I smiled
He smiled warmly back.
"Yeah...let's go with that."
I playfully pushed him.
"Jerk!" I laughed
He laughed at me and we looked at each other, the laughter dying down and his and my smiles disappearing.
"I'm really gonna miss you, Caine. It was an honor to work with you all of these years."
"Hey, this doesn't have to be goodbye you know. There's Skype, email, text, and cell phone."
"And what would we talk about, the next boy I'm ga-ga over like a high school girl? or maybe the next dress I buy?"
He laughed and his brown eyes glistened happiness.
"You are a trip Ellie. We'll assess that bridge when we get to it alright? But you can always call, don't hesitate if you need to talk."
"I won't."
I studied the man with brown hair, now going grey in some spots. The smile lines on the sides of his mouth and the lines in the corner of his eyes. He looked very well for a guy in his late forties, but he has taught me so many things it's amazing.
"Hey, instead of sitting in pity, why don't we go get some lunch?"
"Sure. But, don't we have patients?" I asked
"Yeah. But Leo will take care of it."
"Now is that really fair to ask of the new guy?" I asked him
"He'll understand."
"Good point, be right back. In the meantime, grab your stuff."
Caine left the room and I gathered my things looking around the office as I did so. It wouldn't be the same with him gone and someone else's stuff being in here. I really was going to miss his corny jokes, but also, as a father figure. He took me underneath his wing, and that's what I loved most about him. The door opened and Caine popped his head in with a smile.
"Let's go." He smiled
I grabbed my stuff and hurried out after him. On my way out, I saw Leo. He stared at me intently. I didn't know what it was, but my breath immediately seized in my throat. He didn't look away either, just stared at me.
"Have fun." He said
My mouth went dry and hastily tried re-wetting it.
"I will." I said quietly
I got on the elevator and as the doors closed, he still stared at me, with the most seductive smile on his face. When the doors fully closed I took a deep breath and got myself together as I descended. Once I reached downstairs and saw Caine waiting for me, I hurried towards him.
"Hey, you look flushed are you okay?" He asked concerned
"Oh yes, I am fine. Come on, let's go get some lunch."
He said nothing more and led me towards the door.
