ATTENTION!

Ok, so this that you're reading now is the future me telling you that this chapter kinda sucks. I'm not trying to persuade you not to read and I'm certainly not fishing for compliments. But I feel like nearly 2 years after I wrote this chapter, my writing has matured and improved. So please don't be put off by this first chapter because it gets better, I promise.

Hey guys! So, this is my first story that I've written and I started it at 13. This isn't book worthy yet and there are probably a few spelling mistakes but here it is.

And by the way, I tried to make it the characters seem as articulate as possible but no one is perfect.

Prologue:

The weird thing about death, is that you don't know what comes after it.

A moment of pain and then we're thrown into darkness.

Do we go to Heaven? To Hell?

Or do we become ghosts? Cursed to roam the lands, watching as our loved ones move on and eventually die?

Maybe nothing happens after death, and we completely cease to exist.

I'll give you a clue, neither.

I thought life was black and white; we're born, and eventually we leave Earth. But what I didn't know, was the spectrum of grey in between. And for every shade, a different possibility.

My name's Lexi.

I lived, I died, and I ended up creating a whole new grey.

This is my story...

Transylvania, November 15th, 1847.

I looked at the glass, convincing myself that I was doing the right thing.

No, I'm not about to cut myself, or end my life. It's simply a drink, alcohol.

There are times in life where one must prepare themselves for tragedy.

It was, after all, unavoidable and I'd had a gut-wrenching feeling that something bad was going to happen all day. I couldn't explain it any better than it's what I'd imagine death to feel like.

It was a bit distracting, if I'm being completely honest.

After all, I was here to celebrate a special occasion - my birthday - and frankly, I'd been ignoring my best friend, Delina.

"Having fun?" She questioned, motioning to the pub we arrived at 2 hours earlier.

It had been crowded and drunken men danced around like they were looney. Even now, several hours later, they cheered and danced and sung, not seeming to grow tired. The man next to me leered and leaned forward, casting me a venomous glance.

A fake smile found its way to my lips. "The best." I sounded enthusiastic but was growing dreary. The drink called to me again. I seized it and brought it to eye level. What did they put in this?

"Do not pull that poppycock with me Lex. Tell me what has gotten you all riled up."

If only she knew the horrors I faced. The shadows I saw. That monster that could not possibly exist. And yet, he did. I know what I saw. What I went through. Nothing could drown out the screams and the shouting. Darkness. Torture. Excruciating pain. Fire flickered from the torches. The room grew darker with every second. Sweat dripped down my brow. Not now. Please not now. Shadows swirled against the walls. And yet no one noticed. The floor became alive and moved in time with the music. Those brown eyes glared down at me. Everyones eyes were brown in the pub now. He had taken over them. Or become part of them. I did not know.
