Chapter 2

Lexi.

I walked up the steps that led me to the green double doors of California High, shaking with nerves. I stopped for a second with my hand on the door, debating whether or not to go through with this. I'd spent hours this morning doing my makeup, perfecting my hair, raiding my wardrobe for my best clothes.

All that effort for my first day of school. I didn't really know how schools worked, being home schooled and all, but I had read books. I knew there were cliques. I knew there were mean girls. I just wanted to make a good first impression. Taking a deep breath, I opened the doors. Everyone had been laughing, crying, smiling, talking, texting, eating, getting stuff out of their locker or just simply walking, but once I'd stepped inside, they'd stopped what they were doing to look at me. There was an awkward silence and I was beginning to wonder whether coming to school was a good idea or if I was better off turning around and walking home. After a few more seconds of silence, everyone burst out laughing and started pointing fingers.

"Vampire." One girl whispered next to my ear before she knocked my shoulder.

"Freak." Another announced as I whizzed around, wondering which direction the noise had come from.

"Loser." A boy shouted, near to the back.

"Miss fit." A teacher laughed. I thought adults were supposed to be maturer than the students?

"You're a mistake." A little girl, no older than 14, said as she brushed past me.

All these people were laughing at me because of what I was. I was being called names when they didn't even know me. Just because I was different, didn't mean I wasn't capable of liking, loving.

"You're cursed." A footballer yelled, banging into my shoulder as he raced past me quickly.

"Trou-ble! Trou-ble!" A group of cheerleaders chanted over and over again.

"Dangerous." Someone said towards the front.

"Monster." Now that one stung. I'd never killed anyone, how could I be a monster?

"Stop it! Just stop it!" I screamed but having vampire hearing didn't help. "Wake up, wake up, wake up." I chanted over and over again but nothing seemed to be working.

I pinched myself but that didn't work either. All I could hear in the background was the students laughing at me. The next thing I knew, something hit me in the face. I caught it before it hit the ground and examined it. I didn't need to really - the colour kind of gave it away. A blood bag. Another thud. And another. And another. Soon, everyone was throwing blood bags at me. Where did the students get these from? How could they possibly know?

"Vampire. Vampire. Vampire." They all whispered simultaneously.

I couldn't believe I'd ever wanted to come here. All these unwelcoming people were being so mean and nasty that I just wanted to run back home, slam my bedroom door shut and cry. All of a sudden, my vision became blurry and I felt like I was drifting in and out of consciousness. The names they were calling me became less and less audible. But the last one rang out loud and clear.

"Abomination."

I bolted upright and smacked my head on the ceiling.

"Ow." I mumbled, even though it didn't hurt as much as I wanted it to.
