The past few weeks in Hawaii everyone forgot about the thought of the war in Hawaii, people were starting to pretend that the attack in December didn't happen, which was the best way to go, but it wasn't something people could sweep under the carpet. People couldn't just forget what happened, and Peter especially knew that. And he was hoping that Delilah wouldn't forget about Gavin either, even though she had written to him all the time.
He spent some time with Mike and Dominic to get his head cleared, but there were times when he wondered if Gavin was still writing to Delilah, but he never knew what was going on because he tried to distance himself from people like Delilah. He distanced himself from Delilah because if there was news, bad news involving Gavin. He didn't want to know if something bad happened to him. But if something were to happen, he was going to find out regardless. The boys spent a lot of time going to boxing matches. Betting on who was going to win, most of the time, Mike and Peter betted on the same people, while Dominic decided to be different from them and bet on the opponent.
"You boys trying to lose money or sum?" Dominic asked Mike and Peter as he was confident that the boys would lose their money.
"Nah, we like an underdog," Mike responded.
"We both do," Peter added.
Dominic knew why however because Peter was an underdog growing up, and Dominic knew that. And Mike also grew up as an underdog, mainly because of the way he was raised. So the two of them grew up underdogs, so that is why they loved underdog stories. the guy they were betting on was scrawny, scrawny as can be, while Dominic was rooting for the stronger guy. The stronger guy ended up winning, Dominic put his palm out, hoping the boys would give him money. They did exactly.
"Never bet on the weaklings," Dominic stated hoping to give advice. Mike reminded me that it matters to the mind, more than the muscles. Which was something that Dominic tended to forget, and Mike and Peter had knowledge, which was something that Dominic lacked, he just talked a lot rather than doing it.
"I promise next match, we will get our money back!" Mike claimed, "Maybe I can go in the ring against that guy or Peter!"
"Oh no, I am not getting dragged into this Mike!" Peter said as all three of them walked out of the stadium. As Dominic got in the driver's end, Mike got in the passenger and Peter sat in the back and Dom drove off.
Once they got back home, Dominic looked over and saw someone waiting at Peter's, it wasn't a Navy officer, which was Mike and Dominic's first thought, and then they got a closer glance to look.
"It's Delilah, what is she doing here?" Dominic asked.
Peter looked to see Delilah, he needed to know if this was the news that he didn't want to get.
"Alright, you can drop me off here," Peter said
"Are you sure?" Dominic asked and Peter just responded with a nod and decided to get out of the car, he walked over to the stairs of the front door where she was and saw that she was upset.
"Delilah, is everything okay?" He asked concerned. Delilah couldn't speak, she needed to tell him but she couldn't but she had the telegram in her hand. So she just handed it over to him, as Peter looked at the telegram, he knew. He knew that Gavin was gone.
"I don't understand." Peter said in denial but later angry at Gavin, "Why the hell did he decide to go on that mission? This is exactly what I was afraid of!"
"Peter." Delilah cried, "Please, let's not do this."
"Why not?" Peter yelled, "You should've told me the moment you got this, why didn't you?"
"I tried!" Delilah sobbed.
Peter was filled with anger, and a little bit of denial. His big brother was gone. It was everything he was fearing, while Delilah was filled with sadness, the love of her life was gone. All those dreams, and the future she imagined with him, every part of it, was all gone, and she wasn't going to get that dream home that future with Gavin that she wanted.
"You know, this isn't fair," Peter said trying to hold his anger in.
"You're right." Delilah added, "One moment he proposes, the next day he leaves and now he's gone. For good."
Delilah was right, she had a whole future in the palm of her hands and all of it got taken away from her in a matter of seconds, she didn't know how to process it, but it was real. This was the new life they were living more people were going to die, it was a war that they were in and it was actually happening. Peter didn't know how to comfort Delilah, the best he could do was put his hand out, so she could hold onto it, which she did. Peter wasn't the best at comforting, and he knew that, but he tried his best, and he wasn't good with grief either. So there were moments where he didn't know how to feel. Because it was going to happen, but he just didn't know when it was going to happen.
But now it happened
