By April of 1942 months have passed since everyone saw Gavin in Hawaii, Delilah was still writing to him constantly, and her page numbers have increased each month. When she started writing it was four pages, then it slowly went to ten pages. She missed him like crazy, and the longer he was gone, the more she missed him, but at the end of everything, it almost felt like he was there with her. Even if he was thousands of miles away from her. Every Friday night, she would write to him after hanging out with the girls, so he remembers that she never stopped loving him and never gave up on him. She knows him and she knows that he is training hard and was slowly becoming a hero.
Delilah missed him and was worried about him every day, but she told herself she wasn't going to dwell on anything because she knew that she was a strong woman. She told herself that if anything were to happen, she was going to continue with her life, and not worry or panic, because worrying about something that has not happened yet can't be good, especially if it was over something that has not happened yet. To keep her mind off things, she would spend time with the girls and work extra hours in the hospital to become a better nurse and help other pilots and prepare to incase anything were to happen again because it was a war and she didn't know what to prepare for.
Meanwhile, for Peter, April was a month of him training to become a better pilot, getting extra flight hours to help him train better, and working towards being a better pilot, and get drafted into battle after this top-secret mission that Gavin was in, maybe it would be him instead of Gavin next, he didn't know how it would work. But he wanted to make something of himself and prove a lot to the world that he wasn't 'the joke' nor just 'Gavin's little brother'. Mike was the one who Was the most supportive of him, teaching him everything he needed to know, and giving him tips to make him a better pilot than Gavin ever was, because that was Peter's goal to be better than his brother, Mike was worried that Peter's ambitions to be better than someone, especially his own brother would end up being his downfall because jealousy was an ugly disease. But Mike was also Making sure Peter didn't stress himself out too much and just making sure he got his confidence back and never let anyone get into his way, no matter what was happening with the world. Because he was sick of being in a world where Gavin was there, babying him or just being compared to him in general. Because he wasn't Gavin, he was Peter, a completely different person and people didn't understand that. But now was the time for him to finally show it, that he was Peter.
"Alright, you got it from here?" Mike asked him as he put Peter in a plane that can suit him well, and something that could potentially challenge him.
"Yeah." Peter sighed and was ready to start the plane, "Am I actually doing this?" He was still in disbelief about the fact that he was finally doing what he wanted,
"Yeah, you're doing this Pete, and I'm so proud of you." Mike smiled at him, "This is all you ever wanted."
Peter sighed again and started the plane. He seemed like he knew what he was doing, he was a natural, and the plane went up and knew all the buttons and what to press and how to move it. And what buttons not to hit, and if there was ever an issue with a plane he knew exactly what to hit and what to do.
He learned from his brother, Gavin, the reason that Peter wanted to be a Military Pilot in the first place, Gavin was Peter's role model, even though Peter envied him on numerous occasions. But he knew that jealousy would be a problem and could be his downfall, so he had to hide the green-eyed monster from everyone so nobody saw him as the 'spoiled little brother who was jealous of his brother' because he knew everyone else knew that was not true.
"Peter you're a natural!" Mike shouted
Peter flew down and Mike helped him get out of the plane, Mike cheered him on and was proud to see him develop as a pilot, especially in a short amount of time. Peter was pleased that someone saw him as an individual that could fly a plane.
"I'm so proud of you Peter," Mike said as he got out of the plane. Mike patted his back and was pleased to see how far he had come.
Meanwhile, in Tokyo, it was the day of the raid in Japan and Gavin was in a B-25 for the first time in his pilot career. There was a lot he was trying to process while getting on that specific plane, the first thing that he was processing was that he had spent the past three to four months and he was chosen specifically for this mission. There was a reason he was chosen for this mission, is because he was one of the strongest military pilots, and the goal was to invade Japan and to make a bombing run on Japan, Elliot hated using the word revenge. Gavin was in between. But he wanted this to be for his country, his family, his friends, and his love.
They spent the longest time training and preparing to bomb Japan for the attack on Hawaii, preparing B-25s and training to make sure the battle plan was in stone for each soldier, and to make sure everyone was cut out to train. There were some people that were killed in training, since they weren't using their B-25 properly, including Charles, a soldier that got too cocky and crashed into the sea. Elliot was still alive, however, so he and Gavin agreed to stick together.
When the launching of the planes started. Gavin tried to make sure he was talking to Elliot in his plane. Elliot heard him clearly and tried to talk to him as much as possible.
"Lewis, can you hear me it's Kelly, Over." Gavin called to him
"Kelly, this is Lewis over," Elliot replied
Gavin reminded Elliot to not freeze and make sure to keep aware of his surroundings because they are never going to know where anyone can be, for all they knew there could be a soldier right behind them ready to slit their throats.
Gavin looked over and saw the photograph of Delilah, as a reminder of why he needed to survive this mission.
But later, Gavin heard a sound, and immediately he knew that the sounds couldn't be good. it was the sound of fuel running low.
"Elliot. I'm running low! Mayday!" Gavin shouted.
"Me too!" Elliot called out.
As that was occurring, Gavin had all of these thoughts in his head. He realized he was about to crash in the ocean, his parachute was broken and he knew that this was it.
"Elliot don't freeze" Gavin shouted hoping Elliot would hear from him.
That was the last time Elliot and Gavin heard from each other.
"Gavin..." Elliot called out, "May Day! May Day Lieutenant Kelly!"
