Note: I know it's been a while, so I made this chapter a little longer than usual. Enjoy!
Y/n's POV
"Thanks for allowing me to stop to pick Makayla up from school," Adam said as he parked the car in front of the elementary school.
I waved him off. "Adam, it's no problem. Really. Besides, you offered to buy me coffee and a donut. What cop can say no to that?"
"None that I know of," Adam replied jokingly. "This should only take a few minutes. All we've got to do is pick her up and take her back home. The babysitter should be there soon." The two of us waited outside, and within a few minutes, Makayla walked out the front doors, a huge smile on her face. When she saw Adam and I, she made a beeline for us, hugging Adam tightly first before turning to me.
"Hey Makayla," I greet and give her a fist bump. "How was school? Learn anything new today?"
"We talked about all kinds of space stuff. Today we learned that Jupiter is the biggest planet and Saturn has a bunch of rings around it," Makayla recalled.
"That's cool," I comment. "Back when I was in school, I sucked at astronomy."
"Astronomy?" Makayla questioned.
Adam ruffled her hair. "It means the study of space, kiddo. You ready to get home?"
"Yeah!" Makayla chirped.
"Excuse me," a woman interrupted. "I'm sorry. I have to stop you. Who are you?"
"Oh. My name's Adam Ruzek," Adam introduced.
"And you're Makayla's..." the woman trailed off. "You're not her father, I take it?"
"No, ma'am," Adam answered. "Kim Burgess is her guardian. I'm just here to pick Makayla up from school."
"She didn't authorize you for pick up," the woman claimed.
"Oh, okay, gotcha. I'm sorry," Adam apologized. "I didn't know that was a thing."
"Makayla, honey, can you step over here with me please?" the woman requested.
"No, she's fine with me," Adam insisted. "I'm just gonna call Kim, and we're gonna get this straightened out."
"I'm still gonna need her to step over here with me. Come on, honey," the woman beckoned.
"I'll call Kim," I tell Adam. "You guys go on ahead inside and sort this out."
"You sure?" Adam quizzed. "I don't want to leave you out here in the cold."
"I'll be fine," I assure him. "I grew up in Chicago, remember? I'm used to the cold. Besides, I've got to call my mom anyways, and I'm not too sure you want to hear her complain about how she hasn't gotten word about any new grandkids yet."
"Okay. Hopefully this won't take too long. I'll text you if anything changes," Adam spoke and sent me a small smile before following Makayla and the woman back into the school.
....................................
"Hey," Adam breathed out as he met up with me back in his Jeep. "Voight just called about a case. Possible missing tender age. Kim's gonna take Makayla home and the two of us are going to meet him at the scene."
"All right. Everything okay?" I ask.
"Yeah. There was just some sort of mix up," Adam responded. "Everything's fine. Lets just get going." At the scene, we met up with the rest of the unit and got all the info we needed on our newest case.
"All calls lodged?" Voight inquired.
Kevin nodded. "Yes, sir. Missing tender age, we already threw out a BOLO and an Amber Alert."
