Y/n's POV
"Morning, Sarge," Kevin greeted Voight. "We've got a female DOA. She took one in the head and one in the chest. The two offenders fled on foot going westbound. We've got a grid search going up now."
"Kim, Hailey, and I just talked to witnesses, and we've got a lot of them. The bus was doing its regular route, which is five stops. The driver came over the intercom to say that there was an engine malfunction, so she went to the back of the bus twice to check on it. That's where we run into a problem. A CTA bus engine can only be accessed from outside," I put forth.
"So they stopped in this lot here," Kim continued. "The driver said everyone needed to stay in their seats due to the malfunction, and three passengers weren't willing to do so. Two male, Hispanic, 20s. One female, Asian. Young, 18 or so."
"So they came to the front of the bus, tried to get off, the driver tried to stop them, a struggle ensued, and one of the guys shot the driver twice," Hailey declared.
"The driver's name is Joy Cleming," Jay told us as we neared the crime scene, the actual bus itself. "She worked for the company for six years, and she was holding this note in her hand." Jay then passed the note to Voight, who scanned over it. Before I could get a look at it, Adam interrupted.
"Hey! The bus company's here!" Adam called out. Jay, Voight, and I walked over to him, and there was a man at his side. I'm assuming this was someone from CTA. "This is Sergeant Voight. Sarge, this is Martin, the head of security."
"I understand you patched the driver's call through to 911," Voight brought up.
Martin nodded. "That's right. Joy asked for a detective assist. She was dealing with an unruly passenger. Our intent was to have CPD meet her here at the lot."
"Okay, she was holding this in her hand. You got any idea what that might mean?" Voight asked and showed Martin the note.
"Well, that explains it. We teach that in training. All of our drivers are trained to identify victims of sex trafficking and offer them help. The bus has footage. I can should it to you, if you'd like," Martin offered.
"That'd be great," Voight accepted. "Lets see it." Back at the district, we watched the footage CTA sent us, and it wasn't pretty. When Joy tried to keep the three passengers on the bus, one of the men shot her. Now, we were just trying to identify them. As everyone left the room, I walked over to Jay.
"Hey. What happened last night?" I question. "I thought you were coming straight home."
"Yeah, I got hung up at Central Detention. Just routine stuff. It's all good. I'm all right," Jay assured me.
I frowned. "You sure?"
"Absolutely," Jay confirmed and leaned over to press a kiss to my cheek. "Everything's fine." An hour later, we all gathered in the bullpen to share the information we had. I took a seat in my chair and rolled it so that I was closer to Hailey and could see the white board, and as I did, Kim started presenting.
"The transportation team got her ID off the flight manifest. Her name is Willa Tan, 20 years old. She flew into Midway from Sedona late last night," Kim started.
"It looks like she was there for the holiday weekend. She checked into one of those massage, bath, hotel, eat and treat places," Adam continued.
"A spa resort," Kim identified.
"Right. That's the name," Adam agreed.
"Dude, how did you not know that?" I laugh. "That's common knowledge."
Adam waved me off. "Yeah yeah yeah. Whatever. The point is, I spoke to the front desk manager. Willa checked in on Thursday. She did some massages, some studying in the lobby, and then caught the red-eye back to Chicago. She is a student at Northwestern originally from Michigan. I'm trying to get in touch with the family."
